On the subject of Faro
After much discussion (well 2 mins) a plan has been formed
we was considering renting a largish villa (if we can find one) for next years Faro run
We would all be riding down together and then riding back up through france (if that agreeable with everyone)
views/opinions etc wanted
as well as a list of names of those who want to come
obviously we would have to book early for the villa (or whatever we can find) so deposits would be needed
and the villa could be used as a base for those want to go to the rally and those who wanted to tour instead (cars welcome) and would be a bonus if one or two cars did come
so anyone up for it
and i dont mean to rush people but could they put a definatly or a maybe so we know exact starting figures (something to base prices on)

UPDATE
the route back up through spain and france is 1303miles so i reckon this would be a five to 6 day ride back so it is worth considering whether this can fit in with the timescale as well...so ideas on this would be welcome or would people prefer to go back the same way they came
which would be Plymouth to Santander then a 750 mile ride to Faro which i am reliably informed (thanks freak) take 3-4 days due to the heat
so opinions and idea's welocme

whats needed is a copy of the site map like the 1 HERE (http://www.motoclubefaro.pt/HomeUK/homeuk.html) this would make it clearer for peeps who ain`t been before to know where everything is and where to be able to meet peeps.
its nice to see the english version of the MCF web site is up to date, as its usually late june before its sorted.

Yoda

dont suppose you know the dates of the 2006 rally?
Unfortunately no, but the MCF website is usually the best souce of info, even if they only manage to put the portugese version up,
If I did know the dates I`d be booking my tickets the day after the 2005 rally,
how do you think I got flight tickets in the previous years for under £20 each way, book early, very, very, very, very early

Yoda
11-04-2005, 04:01 PM
Ok i have had some villa info come through
and am waiting to confirm the rally dates
BUT
villas very close to the site seem to be impossible to find
i would like comments on the following idea
a villa within 30-40 minute ride to faro so we can tour and visit other places as well
i have a few more details of villas coming through
and will post details as soon as i get them
they are rentable from the thursday to thursday so would fit in fine for the rally

also on the way back if a few people were up for it a ride back up through france would be nice and for those wanting to travel back freom santander we could all ride up to there and carry on up through france (this would add another week on though)

dracken1
11-04-2005, 05:17 PM

that makes
11
i figure 14 should be enough or we could run into villa capacity problems

so who else wants to go

rough guide price
is Villa £2200 (£160pp based on 14people)
Ferry + bike or trike £150 each way
then it is petrol and camping or B+B etc.. food and whatever else needs spending on
we may be able to get a better deal on the ferry if we book as a group

NEED SOME HELP HERE FOLKS
Having phone brittany ferries it seems that prices do not come out untill september, and they seem to pick a price out of their head as a guide price and are a complete bunch of unhelpful tossers,
anyone know anyway of getting a price from the knobheads, or a guide price at least.
without a guide price i cannot even figure out if this is a viable trip or not. the person i just spoke to said it was about £700-£800 for one person and a motorcycle?..so its anybodies guess, and then there is the vagueness of whether a trike is classed as a car GRRRRRRRR

at the moment i think the numbers are full...BUT depending on whether we can get a realistic price, (especially for trikes) and once we sort out a ferry price we can sort out the villa, but its seems a pain in the arse at the moment
there is a possibility of getting two villas if the numbers are right

once i get a final price i will do a roll call again just so everyone is sure
i have phoned P+O
and there prices are
portmouth to bilbao (which would extend the holiday by 1 day as it sails on a monday and not a sunday)

there prices for sept this year are
bike and 1 rider 320 return
trike and 1 rider 360 return

these are a guide and will be dearer in july but again until the end of sept i wont know

when i do the final roll call is when i need people to commit, until then people have time to be sure they want to go

i will know for definate in september, and non-refundable deposits will be needed then as well, so you must be commited to go, and as Doro pointed out pixie n phil aint going so there is extra space.

didnt mean to sound blunt, the ferry companies really pissed me off

a rough costing guide will be £400 - £500 Per person for ferry (but if going as a pillion it comes down a fair bit)
Villa is going to cost about £250per person depending on number, and this can only really come down

then its petrol, food, living traveling expenses

not quite that bad

now this is a rough guide
2 people on 1 trike is not much more than one person on 1 trike (same with a bike) so couples who are going pillion are going to save a lot more,
the villa rate depends on people and that is based on 10 people sharing a 14 -16 person villa

not sure what fuel costs are like, over there but it is 750 miles each way for arguments sake use 25mpg (based on uk prices is £200)

then its food and drink

camping (or travellodges or similarfor those that want)on way down and back so those costs should be minimal

i am guessing at about£1200 - £1400 per single person
and £1900 - £2000 for a couple, maybe but until the damn ferry companies decide to get their arse into gear, i dont really know

Petrol is just under half the price it is over here. Food is extremely cheap too. Rik n me ate a three course meal plus a bottle of wine and coffee after for 15 Euros the both!!
If you give me some idea of where/what route you'll take in Portugal I'll look up camping sites etc. The other alternative and nice and cheap too is to stay in Youth Hostels which is what we do when we are there, they are all over Portugal and very very cheap, (plus the ones we have stayed in all have had disabled facilities too) we again are staying in one when we go again in Sept, double room, on suite bathroom, 15Euros a night !! And thats per room not per person!! They have them on the beach , in all the big cities... almost everywhere in fact , just pay £22 joint membership here that covers you internationally as well...

May I recommend a very useful site our lot (Perverts in Leather) used to plan our trip down...well, I flew but the others hard-cored it all the way down..
Biker Steve who runs it is a good guy and one of the Moto Club De Faro helpers during the rally.

http://groups.msn.com/MotoClubeFaroRally

The published date for the 2006 rally is (and I quote)
"The Next 25th International Rally & 15th Motorbike Show will be held from 10am Thursday 20th July 2006 to 2pm Sunday 23rd July 2006"

HIGHLY recommend Faro for those who aint been yet, especially next year as it's their 25th. I'm wearing my Faro t-shirt (FREE! with the ticket) as I type .. remarkable as It's only an XL and I aint overflowing it.

We're talking about the villa idea in the club as well, cos it's too hot to sleep in the day and it don't get going until well late in the evening.

Pat the route as yet is not planned but will involve a stopover at yours if you are in by then :) :)
the youth hostels sound perfect, cheap and cheerfull, excellent, do you have a list of the hostels, and do you need to pre-book them

Shaun
I am a member of that group since a couple of weeks ago :)
villa's depending on the number of people are about £170 - £250 pp and 8 to 10 person villas seem to be easier to find than larger capacity ones, and if there are more people than that there are a few with 2 x 10person villas very close together

100%Pat
18-08-2005, 08:25 AM
Yoda I'll email you over the web link for the youth hostels, they have rooms of all sizes, you 'special people' :D can have double rooms with facilities while the other who dont need so much pampering.... can get rooms that sleep 6-8 or even 10 at 5 euros a head in most places....

If anyone fancies the scenic route, me, Koala, Rob and Wij (at least... others are probable) from the Perverts in Leather are doing the Dover route, making a 2 week holiday of it. They all did it this year and know the tricks and routes, and from all accounts had as much fun en route as at the rally. I flew this year, which was logical and cheaper but you only live once and I'm kicking myself for missing the trip.

I'd rather spend the money the Bilbao ferry route would cost on petrol and continental cooking/wine/women. Koala's bike is a GT550 so we ain't looking to do a Gumball Rally across Europe.

We're looking at 4 days there, 4 days at the rally and about the same back to Dover. Staying the Sunday at a Dover B&B, Day one takes about 400 miles to west cost of France, Day two about a 100 miles over the Pyranees (don't sound much distance but it's twistey-turney), day three as far as Madrid (avoiding the city itself) and last day make the rest of the journay to Faro. (Day 5-8 Get drunk, laid and tanned.)

Hopefully taking a leisurely pace will give us time to do some touristy bits in France and Spain as well as Portugal, and riding in a (very) loose group will give some backup in case of FUBARS. Although in our club we are notoriously all individuals ("I'm not!!") it's good to have someone to watch yer back & gear and share the experience.

Hope that gives some ideas, let me know nearer the time if anyone wants to hook up. More the merrier.

So I contacted Brittanny Ferries by email and a very helpful young lady there says the Return fare is £289 PER BIKE... regardless of whether it is Rider only or Rider + Pillion, which aren't charged for. Still have to pay for accommodation so add another £20 return for a reclining seat each. 4 person cabin is another £119 per leg (£239 altogether) which works out at £59-50 per person for the to-and-from trip... not bad for 2 nights accomodation. Further 10% discount if you arrange a 10+ bike group booking.

Not read the whole thread , so forgive if it's already mentioned here:

I used Ferrysavers.com
If you click around the site , you'll find a landline number you can talk to one of those human being thingies.

Got £40 return from Dover -Calais , 14 day excursion.
Taking into account , camp site fees , fuel , beer , food , beer , Faro entrance , beer , it cost me a total of £575 all in. And I came back via all the expensive toll roads , so you could knock 100 Euros off that still. But.. I didn't buy anything more than food , beer and petrol - just the neccesities.

I think it was a "cheap do" and seen the sights that you certainly couldn't do from the comfort of an airplane recliner.

Looks like the PIL Tour to Faro is in a Go Situation, Houston... currently got 9 signed up people myself included, with possiblity of more. If we get 10+ bikes going, it's knocking 10% off the £289 return fare for each bike, so down to about £260 each plus £20 for the recliners there and back. Cheap booze cruise Hee hee.

Last year I got an info pack from P&O. They were doing a round trip deal, E.G. Portsmouth to Bilbao out and Cherbourg to Portsmouth return, no time limit. Cant remember the price but was cheaper than standard!!!!

And where do you get 3/4 days travel to Faro from Bilbao? Last year went from Bedfordshire to Calais to Almeria in S.E. spain in 3 days, two up with luggage, inc ferry time. Yeah it was unbelievably hot but 10 mins in a shower at the end of the day and all forgotten.
One thing to bear in mind........fuel costs. My VN does 120 to the tank but the further south you go the less it does due to the heat. One stretch at 85mph got me all of 55 miles.............
Total cost for two weeks, two people, inc ferry, ride all the way and back, staying in motorway hotels, (50 euros for two) or truckers hostals (very cheap @ 18Euros a night) using toll roads and partying/ sightseeing constantly cost £1400. I.E. £700 each. Bargain.

I dont think its cancelled just that Yoda cannot make it now and he was the organiser.

Griff I think those times and prices were due to the fact that some travelling were disabled and needed more time/stops/better accomadation... :D
