Date of build is irrelevant, it goes off the date of first registration which is on your V5.

but on the directgov website it says
quote
If your vehicle was constructed before 1 January 1973, you could tax it in the 'historic vehicle' tax class. Further information can be found on leaflet INF34.
and also on dvla download
http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065254.pdf

thats why i was asking :D

Normally I would say you can't argue with that..but these days they change their policies as quick as the time changes on your watch..If they want to argue with you they just say that is a guideline and not the law..

However if you trace your vin number that will tell you when and where the bike was made.

'tis the law. Any vehicle produced up to midnight on the thirtyfirst of December 1972 is classed as a historic vehicle and is eligible for a free road tax disc.

This would have been for any vehicle over 25 years old had not that nice Mr Brown abolished this ruling in 1997.

Nope, because when I got an age related plate for my 73 RD350, the engine number/frame number indicated it was built in March 73.

Missed it by 3 months bugger!

Pasty - you need to contact the owners club for your bike. Im not talking about forums but the actual owners club -

they will have all the details you need - you sent hem all the details you have on your bike, they then for a small fee will send you a letter headed letter by return with all the relevent info

date of building is the one they go by, SOHC forum might be able to help with a few things like links but you'd need a dating letter from a recodnised body like honda owners club or Vjmc possibly
