Softail shocks work in tension not compression, so those off a "normal" bike wouldn't work.

i am after running the exhaust very close to the frame and under the seat unit.but i don't fancy looseing my fuel tank.or going down the taylor made route i think there is to many custom vmax that look to much alike. so the idea is go down the route of looking hard to see the mods. this will be the third make over since i bougt the bike in 1999.so watch this space lol

Sorry but you're confusing me now. Evo is a name for the Harley engine that came after the shovelhead. Bikes with this engine fall into two basic types. Normal swing arm, such as the Dynos, and Softail swing arms. The shocks from the two different type of swing arm are not interchangeable as one works in compression and the other (the softail) works in tension. As far as I know Harley is the only manufacturer to that uses a softail swing arm. I presume then, you are building a completely new system for your Max.
I apologise now if I have misunderstood your post and am "teaching my granny to suck eggs" so to speak.

yea makeing a new set up it is the softail type i am after or the evo from the pics i have had a look at the softail has a eye at 1 end and a tread at the other and the evo has eyes at both.but they are both tension type

Aha. Clear now. You want shocks from a Softail and you don't mind if it's an Evo or a Twin Cam.
They're both bloody awful shocks with no spring rate or damping adjustment. The only thing you can do anything with is the ride height.
Good luck with your project, it sounds interesting. Maybe you could use your expertise when it's finished to work out how to put some "real" shocks on a Softail.:D
P.s. try the HDRCGB forum. If you can't get in let me know and I'll ask for you.

only thing I would have changed was to swap them over, as I had the air adjustment valves towards the outside for easy adjustment, damn things got ground down twice LOL
