hi all, gotta chain for my gs550 project, put some links in and it fits great, but some of the links are very stiff therefore when it reaches the front sprocket it dont go round very well!. now , some people say soak it in petrol, some say dont, have oiled it , greased it, etc, what do you suggest? an extra 10 links have gone into this chain so buying a standard 550 chain is not an option, cheers.

Adding new links to an old chain is never a good idea, as the older ones will have stretched or worn a bit. Best option is to go somewhere that sells chain off the roll as opposed to fixed lengths, or buy a longer one off the shelf and cut it.

well, this is a budget build so i am trying to cut a few corners, no show winner this one!. anyway, its my 4th project but never had this annoying problem before. will try a few other things, currently got it in the vice and slowly working it round. its only one link, thats the niggly thing about it, bike is slowly taking shape though. cheers.

to be honest i wouldnt take chances with a chain thats like that.
last thing you want is it snapping and ripping chunks out of the crankcase or your leg/arse.
new engine for the sake of a new chain?

Build whatever you want any way you want.
But always replace the chain.
If its fucked its fucked re chains unless your a cowboy.............

It's not so much a question of winning shows, as of not killing yourself.
Buy a new chain, don't be a tight-arse where your safety (and possibly someone else's) is at stake.
