View Full Version : Odd tyre wear

Iv'e just dropped the front wheel out of my goose necked, hardtail chop and there's obviously something out of line. After 6000 miles the right side of the tyre has worn in a sort of ripple effect. I had quite a vibration through the bars at around 80mph which I always put down to an out of balance tyre but now I'm not so sure. The back tyre is wearing very evenly.

Any ideas or suggestions of where or what to check.

Road camber causing tyre to wear on outside? coupled with the uneven wear pattern it could possibly set up vibration.

Sounds like it could be the wheel bearings on one side?

Although only on the off side of the tyre, it's far more than camber wear SE,
It's very difficult to explain but each section of tread has worn thin to fat almost resembling a tractor tyre

Twisted yokes? Fork oil levels?

Goose neck to frame not straight.

ie. headstock pointing to left of centreline of frame.

you say you have checked the front wheel bearings.
have you checked them in 6 different spots.
i had a blackbird in last week which had not as yet started wearing the tyre
but there was vibration.
there was only any noticable play in the front wheel bearing (nearside one) over a 15 degree rotation. before or after that 15 degrees the bearings felt fine.
on a flat road with very little camber does the bike feel like it's pulling to one side?
you could simply have a bad tyre, some of the older tyre sealants can cause an imbalance.
