just took it for a quick ride round car park, carbs are well out, this is going to be my biggest concern
but hoping that with a little luck I might at least get it rideable.
otherwise its off to the auction house in the sky LOL
oh and I am still under my £500 budget :) although the MOT at £27 will take me over :(

yeah the orignial plan for this was satin black with red and white pin striping, however I got that tank for free, was going in the skip, its got a dent on the front left hand corner, bulldog bash sticker over it now LOL
butI couldnt bring myself to sand that tank down, and I cant pin stripe, so it ended up like this
yes trike is next, still trying to get some big fat rear wheels, cant do anything until I have them
have the shape and design of the frame all worked out, got the engine, and all the rear diff etc etc
soon as I have the wheels I can start on the layout and start working out sizes for wishbones etc
The price of an MOT taking you over budget is nowt worth worrying about, Tony. You have shown what can be done on fuck all budget and a bit of effort in the thought dept. Well done. :thumbu:

cheers, took long enough to do though LOL
tempted to just sell this, should hopefully get about £1000-1200 for it with mot etc
then at least I can go buy the bits to build the trike, but wife reckons I wont enjoy it if I do it that way LOL

I like it...and to be honest I don't think I have ever seen anything quite like it.
Very Minimalist.

the problem is getting it setup, about 250 mile round trip to the nearest place that I know of for rolling road setup, but most annoyingly it appears that the carbs on this engine, dont use conventional jets, the mounting boss is huge
no way I can move the bike that distance or afford to pay to have it setup
today I discovered that the damn thing isnt charging, looks like the rec/reg is dead, gets very hot but no charge to the battery
will be a month or so at a guess before I get to take it for MOT now.
scouring ebay to try and find a cheapy bargain one.

I have checked the output of the generator, and thats fine, so have to be the rec/reg

thanks Nik, coming from someone that sees as many bikes as you, I am really happy :)
been right through all the charging circuit and its deffo the rec/reg all connections are good, but voltage to the battery wont go above 12.3 even when revved hard, rec reg gets very hot very quickly
checked the alternator and I got 20-70+V AC across all 3 combinations of connections
still really hoping to get it MOT'd this Friday.
I really want to get up to the predators bash on this, will be my first time out for a very long while.

woo hoo MOT and Tax :)
minor mod to the gear lever linkage that I got wrong
and need new grips, these look great but hurt the hands like hell, and with gloves on the throttle keeps sliding shut, unless you got a death grip on it

well it didnt last long
off to ebay soon
probably going to lose money on this bloody bike :(
cdi unit died today, only 2 pots running
apparantly the engine that I used they only imported 500 to the UK in '84 so no chance of getting a replacement
will be listing it this week if anyone wants spares??
probably send the tax back get something for that at least
:(
really not a happy bunny

Shit man i wish i had a few quid spare to buy this '
defo cdi thats gone ? and not a coil away ?
What is the model the cdi was fitted to ?
devon-tony
11-04-2010, 07:33 PM
its a gsxr400 made for 1 year only
deffo the cdi. swapped the coil wiring, and swapped the wiring for the sender units etc, all good
got the cdi out and it was hot, smelt like a capacitor or transistor has gone.
looks like you can buy a replacement from a place in australia £114
the 400 was used because it was cheap and there, but really needs a gsx550 or something similar, the 750 is too big for this frame, will fit but looks wrong
the 400 just revs a lot and I cant stand that, especially with the near on open pipes

Theres a gsxr400 sitting in my local scrappys if you got the number off the cdi i can check it out
devon-tony
11-04-2010, 10:04 PM
thanks sadly I have no idea what the number is, the one I have is an aftermarket one
the bike would be about 84 or 85
think the only way that I can be close to getting the right one would be if the engine has only 2 carbs, they run dual twin carbs, one diapghram with 2 slides in each
this would narrow it to 2 models and if it wasnt mega bucks then I would consider the gamble.

Been to the scrappy and the cdi unit has gone off the gsxr :( it was an old steel framed one too so must have been fairly early one .
What sort of money are you after for the bike as is ? pm me the price please
Ta Ian
I thought I recognised it when I saw it at a friends funeral on Wednesday. :)
