The effects of time, road salt and, let's face it,sheer neglect mean that I'm gonna have to repaint the swinging arm and parts of the frame.Powdercoating and stove enamelling are out due to the constraints of time and money,so I'm looking to find out what folk here recommend for both paint and method.I took the swingarm back to bare steel with an angle-grinder fitted wire brush last summer and used 3 or 4 coats of spray can smooth hammerite but the rust is back already.I'm not looking for a show worthy or factory finish, just something durable that'll last for more than a couple of years.Any ideas?

i use red oxide and Japlac made by international paints its available from B&Q and the like under specialist paints also it is self levelling so it goes on quite smooth :D

if you are using spray cans. then take a look at the frost restoration site. in the eastwood section, look for chassis black.
a bit dearer than some cans you can buy but it is very rich in solids and covers a large area.
you must put on a primer coat first. if the bare meal is very smooth it may pay to put on an etch primer.

the prob with hammerite is that it tends to be to brittle. and a swingarm takes a lot of punishment

To be honest for the time, effort and cost:-

blasting followed by powdercoating would be the most effective way of doing it.
Down here that would come in at under £100

around here blasting cost me £5 - £15 depending on the amount.
powder coating costs me £5 - £20 again depending on the amount.
a bike frame, swinging arm, and assorted brackets, has never cost me more than £25 all in for a great job in under 24hrs turnaround, it does help if you know where the back door is in a lot of companies and wot time the boss goes for lunch ;)
though sneaking the complete frame for the V8 trike into the powder coaters at 2am from the back of a transit wasn`t the greatest idea :D
but it was back in my garage by 7am all nice shiney and black ;)

Thanks guys, but did you notice I said powdercoating was a no-no? :D The problem is I the bike lives in the street and I don't have access to a garage or shed,so if I left the bike without the swingarm for however long it takes (I believe the turnaround for the coaters here is at least a week)some lowlife would most certainly tip it off the centrestand!
SO,it looks like I'll go the route Dracken has recommended,a good etching primer and Eastwood's Chassis Black.
Thanks again,though,for your input.
