Well, looks like the season may already be over for my chop as it decided to eat the piston rings on the left barrel whilst I was returnin' today from the Snowplough rally. Sh!t but I'm gonna have to do some gigs now this year to pay for this to be sorted. BOLLOX. Limped it home, now it's sittin' there in the garage lookin' rather sad. However, the ride was comfy enuf, changin' the fork springs worked a treat an' apart from the obvious after readin' the above there's little that I'd change. My mate has suggested goin' to Norman Hyde to get it rebuilt, we'll see, that sounds like it'll cost soooo much. It will give me the time to sort out the brakin' now 'cos it's feckin' awful. How that bike ever got it's ticket after the build I would love to know - an' the brakes are so much better now than when the bike first arrived back here. Dodgy ticket, I think so.

Thats a crapper mate, but you sound like you know enough about engines to sort it.

Still at least you made it home I suppose

Condolences on the temporary death of your chop. If it is only a rebore and ring job, shouldn't be too bad. Better if you could do the strip and rebuild yourself, if you are short of readies....

Gonna venture up the garage tonite to check out the damage if poss, without the aid of a bottle of Jamesons and a large lump of 'class C' tonite - prolly better that way. Thanx folks for your support 'cos I am somewhat gutted. [:{(>

Had a look. Couldn't wait. Took out the plug, shone a light in an' hey presto a rather large hole appeared into view as the light shone on the piston. Double bollox - happier now I know tho (in some mad perverted way).

doro says

that happened to me with a tiger

mechanic said it was caused by the valves being set wrong

if the valves and piston were ok before the rebuild then I reckon you can claim for that!

thats one hell of a bummer stevIe, hope you get it sorted soon.

Cor, that's a bit of a booger, mate. :(

I hope you hadn't started started writing a song about finally getting on the road!

Seriously, keep your chin up, it could always be worse...

STEViE
06-02-2005, 10:37 PM
You're right shep. There's still two other bikes in the garage so that's fine. Some more work gigwise an' I can afford the rebuild that it's now gonna get. I'll still be rallyin' this year so it ain't gonna stop me gettin' out ......

..... would have been nice tho ......

STEViE

Right. Monday mornin' it is. Weekday head on. Am now sat here at the 'puter for the next couple of hours lookin' to find a 'good' place to go for a rebuild. Also gotta find some more gigs, may even have to look at playin' in boozers durin' the week. Now that is far more dauntin' a thought than a rebuild. Have a good day folks.

Don't feckin' think so Gypsy. That bastid wouldn't even sort out a freebie beer for ya on an open mic nite. Tight git !!

Will have a look into yours an' Doro's idea but I'd really like to keep my own engine as there ain't much of the original bike left as it stands. An' even less now that part of the piston is gawn :D

Gypsy
07-02-2005, 10:36 AM

Surely some sort of 'comeupance' now on the BARSTEWARDS that made you wait so long and pay a fortune for it to be built 'PROPERLY' in the first place!

Knowin how long they made you wait, the money (how hard you work for that money!),ferked you about, etc, etc, am fumin at this........so can imagine how you must feel.

Why is it s h i t happens to the nice folk that don't deserve it?!

See you in May,and we'll have a beer and a laugh no matter what! :D

Could be worse m8, my winter hack is a crappy CB 125  I can't bear to be seen on it! Mitch refuses to ride it to work even tho' it means we'd save shed loads of cash on petrol!!!
Wat would you lot do - lose all street cred and go about on a ning-ding machine and save cash or put your foot down and use the car? :D

The last engine rebuild the Bonnie had was around 22 years ago so I've been fairly lucky until now. Typical that it went just after the chop was on the road. Whilst it was bein' rebuilt way back then I had my GS400 to ride around until that spat a camshaft retainin' bolt thru the top cover an' so I bought a MZ125 from a mate down the pub for £50, put a new battery in it an' that saw me thru the summer 'til the Bonnie was ready. I wasn't keen on the idea but it done me proud an' when it came time to sell it anutha mate offered me £100 for it so I was quids in. So Mitch, hide yer pride mate :D

BS - forget it. I have. Saturday I was seriously pissed off but I realised by Sunday nite that I am in the lucky position of being able to supplement my income with more gigs, so that's what I'm doin', anutha couple in the list for this year already after some callin' round today. It's gonna cost me some to get this put right but I'll do it, don't know quite how long but it'll happen. Least I got it out a couple of times an' managed one rally on it :D
Just for the record tho 'cos I don't want folks to get the wrong idea. The engine was NOT rebuilt this time around. All Mr Bike Builder did was strip it down to the casings so the cylinder block could be painted, then he put it back together again.

Ron - Salts a bugger ya Bueligan, don't let that stuff around ya pride for too long. Cheers for your kind words. Take care yourself.

One thing folks, an' please take heed. I spent 1/2 an' hour (an absolute record - well done guys) waitin' for the RAC to fetch up with me on the M25, a little West of the M23 junction. There I was with the bike. Couldn't get up the embankment - far too steep. Got the bike as close to the barrier as poss 'cos every large lorry that came past was givin' it the tremors. I suppose what I'm sayin' is this. When you break down, if ya possibly can, find a safe place to stand. I don't think anythin' has made me feel so vunerable as standin' there beside feckin' huge trucks wizzin' past ... not even that time I had to share a shower with some big guy called Bubba :D - but that as they say is anutha story (an not true at that).

Doesn't explain the brakes though, does it Stevie? I'd really hoped this wasn't going to happen to you. :(

I know... I know...
To be honest, I rode the feckin' thing all the way round the M25 from Southend to Horsham – and I had the biggest grin on my face when I got off. Pogo-ing round the motorway, laughing at all the eejits in their cars who thought they were laughing at me, overtaking Mrs R and the Sprogg in the car doing a gumby at each other!! :D It would do 70 with your head down (arse upwards of course :D). I've already done more miles on it than both Mrs R or the Sprogg (who's bike it was...)

Does anyone know the correct size of rear wheel spacers (for the CM – for that's what it is tha' knows)? and if anyone's got a set of chain tensioners...? (if that's the correct name for them - Dave Silver was very confused – it's the things with the markings on for chain alignment)... that's all that's stopping me (allegedly... oh yeah, that and an MOT, but that can be arranged)

Erm,

removing heads, pushrods, barrels constitutes a substantial strip of the engine.

Which then had to have the barrels slipped over the pistons and rings, then the heads fitted and the pushrods put back in and the timing checked.

Up until this point it had run for 22 years, then someone takes half of it apart, paints it, puts it back together and ....

Blacksword
07-02-2005, 11:22 PM
So Stevie, d'yer think the piston/rings,etc would have gone and done the same if you would have ridden it for another 210 miles in previous condition?!

(still foooookin annoyed at people fooooookin about with 'decent' people!)

... I had my GS400 to ride around until that spat a camshaft retainin' bolt ...

I had a GS400 drop a bolt that kept the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft.

BTW like your choice of whiskey.
