View Full Version : Question of 50cc
Back in the days when the Yam FS1E, Suzuki AP50, Honda SS50, Garelli tiger cross, Malaguti chopper....were all wizzing around the streets............ can anyone remember what was Kawasaki's offering to the 50cc market............ just to restore some sanity to some mates who were arguing this very question.......
anyone ?

At the time Kawasaki didn't have a 50cc mo-ped available in the UK. I think the smallest they had was a 100cc bike.
The AR50 arrived after the 50cc bikes were made to comply with the restricted power/speed limits.

Sanity??? Whats that then???
Agreed with the bleow, they didnt do one until you could have a 50cc motorbike as opposed to a moped ....
Anyone ever try pedaling a FS1E btw??? :D :D :D
P.S. there were also the fragile Fantic's too

Couldn't pedal my AP50 as the chain links were all solid.
Yes, it seemed nippy - 55mph on the clock - after being used to a top speed of 30mph(-ish) on my push bike - was fast enough for a spotty sixteen-year-old.
Was picking up some fork oil yesterday and a Sachs MadAss (http://www.planetbikes.co.uk/sachs_madass_50.shtml) was up on the ramp having it's first service. Compared with other current 50cc go-peds it didn't seem too bad (apart from the name).

Never had a 50.....when I got my licence at 16, I could got straight out and ride up to 250cc......without a helmet! Those were the days.

Started with my ol' GS550 and a Sidewinder. As a big fella I felt a hell of a sight safer on that than on a 125.Tried a CB100 once, needed a claw hammer to extract it from my arse crack!

I only had a step through thing with a huge fly wheel on the side but it made me grin when it went faster than my peddaling. Can't remember what it was called.
Those Madass's are the danglies. What a brill idea and one step closer to non-conformist mopeds. I want one but I'd like a 1200 cc version.

How come most ppl I know say their ped back then could do 55 mph, rose coloured specs I think!!!
Mates at the time all had these;
My FS1E and all my mates FS1E's did just over 45mph, with baffles, a little less without. Only time I saw over 50 on the clock was just before I sold it and the speedo went on the blink. Oh yeah and if it rained heavy, you could see the plug shorting out on the outside of the head, had to push it for 4 miles (thats when I found out how "easy" it wasnt to pedal :D )
The SS50 struggled to do over 40mph, but I beleive you could put an C70/90 motor straight in them?? or was that another myth???
The fantics and garelli's would do a bit over 50mph, does anyone remember the fantic chopper ??? but kept seizing all the time
The callebaro, jeez that was a big bike relatively speaking, but the lad who had that treat it like it was a real off roader, tried to wheelie it out of a rut and the forks caught in the rut and bent like cheese!! :)
The Puch 50, not sure which one it was (M50??) but it was red and was a proper size compared to the rest, it would do 45mph
Best time of my life that was *big sighs*
And have you seen the price ppl want for the damm things on ebay !!!!!!!
WHY?????

hmm the fs1e ive got here does over 55 with a gurt fat git (me) on it, the puch your thinking of is probably the m50 sport or the m50 granprix, doing one up for my daughter, as for the prices it's because some pillocks will pay that much for em, the fizzy cost me £30 3 years ago lad was offered £1500 for it but he wont part with it, the reason i buy the old mopeds for me kids is i refuse to allow em to ride barbie bikes if they wanna ride they have to ride something with a gearbox and at the same time ,they have to rebuild em on thier own with as little help from me as possible, as imo its important that they learn the mechanical side of the bikes they ride one reason is they will respect the bike more, the main reason is if they break down 90% of the time they can get it going again, and its also bloody good fun bouncing around roundabouts

Alegedly you could swap the C70 barrel and head on the Honda.
I had a Malaguti Olympique with a one into two exhaust! I got 52mph out of it on the clock so more like 47mph! it also ha slightly bent frame that dropped lovely into right handers but a pig going into leftys! many a time i had to come home and change me underwear!
A mate of mine had one of them Puch VZ50s? looked like a motorbike but had pedals in proper moped config. and the a three speed gear change on the the handlebar. you braked by pedalling backward!
