There was a feature this month in the Mag. on a superb bike bike that was built in Portugal and the end of the article the writer said "Good on him" for taking the bike out and about to lots of show etc, but then goes on to say "He (the owner) may not have the knowledge or nous to build a bike like this himself, but "at least" he's making the most of riding it".

Now I am possibly way off line here, and may have read something into it that I should'nt..but that kinda gives me the impression that the writer thinks that it is a shame he had the bike built, and it's all somehow not as "worthy" as he would have been if he had built it himself......and to be honest I thought that spoilt a good article.

As it says not everyone can build a bike, some can but don't have the time... some don't have the skills, and some possibly want it to be the best they can get, so want a professional build job.

But what do you think....

Does it matter to you who builds the bike? Home built or Pro built?

Is someone who has a bike built, somehow any less of a biker because he didn't make it all himself in his garden shed.. or are the home build lads and lassies the real bikers..

Over to you....
:D

personally i like to build my own because i enjoy it but i dont think it makes you any more or less of a biker

i am starting to build a trike ( cx500 and a robin) i did'nt have a clue where to start and you peeps sent me some plans and ideas on how things should be done, most grateful. i don't know how long its going to take or whether it will pass the vsa test, but i am going to give it a go.
thats my preferance
with bikes i prefer to buy something i like and not build and many peeps use the same preferance as myself.
hats off to those who build their own
but also hats off to those who go to the custom shop and keep those peeps in the job they love :D

Couldn't have put it better myself. :)

I am having a go at chopping my bike and although I am crap, it's good fun and I hope to come out with a sense of achievement.

I see loads of bikes I would buy and wouldn't change a thing on too!

I have also realised that my answer to your post doesn't actually have a point, which is a shame but there you go! :(

I'd prefer to build it myself, I'd have more pride saying, 'all my own work' than if I'd paid someone to do it, BUT, having said that - the paintwork would be cr@p, the welds would probably fail, the engineering would be warped, but I would learn how to do it right the next time

really I just like to do everything myself, it gives me more sense of achievement

like the trailer I'm gonna build

down side - costs more (due to mistakes), takes longer, uses up yer spare time etc etc

but, I would always have to send it out to be painted cos I really cannot do that

but there again, if I was good at designing bikes, yet no good at building them, then I'd have my bike built by a professional, but designed by me

same thing innit

swings and roundabouts

depends on yer time and money and skills

to me a bike that is not loved or ridden is a waste of time, no matter who built it (this is my opinion - it's not wrong - just different to yours) :D

Stock, shop or homebrew as long as it's ridden is all that counts fer me. ;)

I have to say that i agree with the main sentiment, that it does not matter who builds the bike, as long as another nice custom bike or chop is put on the road.
My 45 Harley Chop was re-built and changed to the way I wanted it by a small harley shop just outside Doncaster called Polar Cycles... they did a superb job, (far better than I could have ever hoped to have done myself, and I have no connection with them apart from being a very satisfied customer), it rides as well as a fairly radical chop will, is safe, and it came out just the way I wanted it to... To me it is just as much MY bike as it would have been if I had done every bit of the build myself...
I also love being able to go to a small builder and take a look at what they are building there, chatting to the guys there etc. getting new ideas for the next bike...
Where would we all be without the mega enthusiastic pro. bike builders of this world. It would be a far worse place without them...

It's the passion that counts
