Anyone got a rough idea how long it takes to get stuff over to Blighty via the US Postal Service (econamy). Had something sent about a hundred years ago which hasn't turned up yet (ok 8 weeks ago  )

really depends on what it is, How big, How heavy etc

But Eight weeks...Hmmm Thats a long time...my last purchase from uncle sam's land was a CD that only took four working days....

economy could mean its going by sea rather than air , i have had stuff take 6-8 weeks that way

8 weeks does seem a tad on the long side.

I always us airmail or express,it might cost more but you get yer stuff when you want it,as in soon rather than when you've almost forgotten it. ;)

Didn't you get a tracking thingy ???

As for coming by sea it only used to take 6/8weeks in the 1800's

economy does mean surface mail. and they do not garantee you will get it in under 16 weeks.
it does depend on what it is, what ship they stick it on, as it may not be making the uk its first port of call

The US Postal charges are outrageous for the service they provide (or don't).I've ordered a few things from the states and the least I've paid is about 40% of the value of the item.I e-mailed a Yank custom shop for a quote for a fatbob fender, the part was about $50,the postage was another $70! On the other hand,I have ordered stuff from NZ,rugby jerseys,t-shirts etc,and the postage has usually been less than £5,with quick delivery, average time 7 working days, the shortest being 3 days.Yes,THREE DAYS from the other side of the world, absolutely astounding considering it's a 28 hour flight from Christchurch!

'Ere Dougie! How come when you post, your postings extend beyond the width of my VDU viewing range, when nobody elses does? It's a pain as I have to keep moving the bloody screen accross to read your erudite drivel! :D

Thanks for the advice everyone :)
I bought a set of over girder forks on E-bay so it's gonna be quite a big package. The shipping cost ranged from $250 - $70. I'm not in any hurry so I went for the cheep option. I'm happier in the knowlege that it could take up to 16 weeks rather than it being 6 weeks overdue. Knowing my luck it will break the world record for the slowest ever delivery  . Incidently, will I have to pay VAT on imported second hand parts?

I've had stuff from the U.S arrive in 3 days but I've also had something that took 12 weeks and when it arrived it had sickers on it saying that it had been inspected by H.M customs. So your parcel is probably in a big pile in a shed somewhere waiting to be sniffed by a dog

Nasty it may be, but cheap, never as you will find out when you try to keep up with the payments, eventually selling all your worldly goods and family members to us ( and still owing your soul to us)......
