These are usually fishing emails to grab your banking details. Unfortunately there are gullible people out there that fall for these scammers.
Believe it or not there are a lot of pensioners on the net, and are too trusting for their own good. My Dad fell for this, he is 82 god bless him, luckily he asked my brother as what he should do before he replied. We soon put him right.

my dad is the same i have to tell him that unless you request something then bin it, and with the firewall if you dont know what it is then Block it (i am sure i will get the call when something stops working :) )
but the main problem now is spyware
damn stuff is worse than virus's
i have used giant antispyware for quite a while and recommend it to anyone
(it is the same thing that microsoft now have and call it microsoft antispy..dont know if they bought them out or just license the engine..but it is a fantastic piece of software...can recommend it to anyone..and if anyone wants a copy just ask

The reason you get so many is that the people sending the ads are paid by email views not by how many people lick on the link or how many people buy the service or are conned.
Crap isnt it

I'm using more anti spyware, adware and the like than you can shake a stick at and so far (touch wood) I don't get spam.I've got AVG Free antivirus,Spybot Search & Destroy,Spyware Blaster and Microsoft Antispyware Beta,Adaware SE,and something called SpoofStick which gives meaningless details if some miscreant tries to phish for your details. All this stuff was free downloads and they seem to be doing the job, what one misses the others catch.

I tend to got to tools and delete files, cookies and clear history, before logging off. This seems to clear most incursions, then I scan once a week with AVG and Adaware. This clears out the rest.
