had an old rickman kawasaki frame arrive today for checking alignment and condition. it had just recently had it's nickel coating chemically removed.
it has been converted to monshock at sometime also.
it doesn't look to bad.

it's still taxed and mot'd by the way:D
it is repairable but as it was probably made from reynolds tubing. we will use 4130 chrome moly for the repair sections.
Blimey! That's a tad grim.

In all my years I have never had a frame rot out. Some have even been left in the garden for donkeys years. Eeeeeee lad I must have been lucky.:D

ive seen a few. goldwings were well known for the lower lh removable frame tube rotting through from the inside. ive seen a couple of xs 11 yams go the same. if theres any way for water to get inside the frame, then it needs a way out. looks like this has had water standing insode it for a while. its almost perfect for rotting tubes is a bike frame. plenty of movement and vibration to shake it up, a bit of heat and a bit of flex to dislodge any scale. rust-tastic!!
dont envy you that job though mate!!

Didn't z1000's have an open bit on the back of the frame that water would get into (I think something to do with a lock but might be wrong) then they would rot out around the side stand mount. Had a mate whose z1000st fell off the stand one day, when he picked it up he realised the stand lug had partly ripped off the frame.
Same as XJ650 swinging arms
The front down tubes on CB400/4's were an open tube which collected crud from the front wheel and rotted from the inside out.
