Jaky and the Toilet Pixies are asking for help...BLOOD BANK IN VERY URGENT NEED OF MALE DONORS TO GIVE PLATELETS NOW PLEASE.

:agree::grouphug:.......for any information on how to give either blood,plasma or platelets please look in your telephone directory on on internet for your nearest donor bank.at the moment they are crying out for MALE platelets but it dosnt stop anyone giving blood,plasma or platelets so please give them something back as you never know when YOU might be in need!

p.s. women can also donate platelets but they got enough female donations at the moment,just need male.

not quite so simple. in order to donate platelets you need to be an existing blood donor who has had no problem donating in the past, have a higher than average platelet count(this they will establish from a blood test), be above a minimum weight limit, and crucially, live close to a regional blood donation suite, as the machines being both heavy and incredibly delicate, cant be taken out on the road. so you need to go to them. also it takes longer, upto 2 hours to donate.
having said that, at the moment, any blood donor is welcome either for whole blood or platelets, i hadnt realised that they had to be male though? ive seen women donating platelets many times.

Leaflet came through the door the other day asking for red blooded males - for platelets - shame there's none living here! I dont think you have to be male to give them...

They won't have my blood cos of an ex partner of mine.

so sorry to have mislead anyone,about giving platlets.......yes,womwn can and do give platelets but at the moment the blood donor service is looking for MALES to donate the platelets as they got plenty female platelets.hope this helps.

ive been donating platelets for years, im well over 200 donations now, and cos im a big lad and have what even the girls at the nbs call an exceptionally high platelet count, (high 300's) im able to donate 3 whole units of platelets on every visit. so by back of the fag packet maths, ive probably donated over 500 units of platelets thus far. i go every 4 weeks, but when my new job starts im going to be available to go more frequently. im hoping to get to over 500 donations eventually.

I used to donate every two weeks and during the 1 1/2 hours on the machine both arms one out one in my blood was spun to remove the platelets and plasma and then the blood returned into the other arm.

They used to class it as a 6 pint donation so you soon clocked up the numbers.

At 100 units we were given a Wedgwood plate and at 500 I got a very nice crystal glass. We went to the Royal College of Physicians in London to receive the awards.

I gave up at about 700 units because my arms used to ache at the elbows too much between going where the needles had been sitting for so long over the years.

Plus you couldn't scratch your bloody nose which always started to itch as soon as the needles were in...:D

I still have marks on each arm where the needles went each time.

might be worth going back and trying again. the new machines that have been introduced in the last year or 2 have speeded the process up considerably. my triple donation now takes just 53 minutes, and they seldom use the 2 needle techinque now, meaning that you can alternate on diferent visits. ive got scarring on my left arm now, but im changing back to my right next visit as ive done 12 months on the left, and the scarring i previously had on the right has cleared up completely now.

my daughters a trainee tattooist. but i cant get any tats at the mo cos i consider my blood donating to be an important thing for me to do.
