Asuming it is mechanically sound?
Any ideas as to what it is and its ratio?

Looks like it could be off a Sierra, Aren't the ratio's marked on them?

early ones were 2wd, from (i think) J reg onwards they were 4wd.

It isn't from a 2.8 Xr4x4i, on those the subframe is ally and the diff bolts to the offside of the sump (nearside shaft goes through the sump). I think the 2.9 4x4 sierra was the same?

Being a front diff it is possibly designed for reverse rotation, ie high pinion/ driving on the opposite side of the teeth. That being the case it will have little or no wear in a rear diff application but will be weaker as it will be driving on the weak side of the c/wheel

looks like a vitara or similar small 4wd front diff. Defo not a ford one as they were mounted on the side of the engine and drove through the sump.

Definatly not Vitara, the diff heads on the wrong side of the vehicle.
