can i use a gs500 coil

A coil is a coil.
Except you will find that they differ between bikes with black boxes and those with points.
They still work but burn out quick.
I do forget the tech reasons but have seen this happen quite often.
Older coils of points bikes don't seem to last on newer bikes.

as long as its a similar ohm rating should be ok.....

Have you tested the coil with a sharp stick/or a multi meter.Could be something else otherwise?

if its got two...as you quote the left one............swap em over to see if problem swaps with them.............if it dont then its summat else....also check all the connections on both the ht and the lt side...
