about where it should be ..She must havre been very negative in court...but the question asked is would it have gone that far if he wasn't a copper.... I know of a local case where a car rear ended a lass who was a friend of mine causing injuries and writing off the bike....not even a due care and attention rap for the car driver...

I think 16 months is fair, as at her age it is probably life.....
I think it is about time sentencing reflected the injury or loss involved if the driver/rider is proven negligent.

Louis is right. In most similar cases where there are no aggravating features such as drink or excessive speed, the driver usually escapes jail. The fact that he was a copper must have infuenced the sentencing.
Good news is that it sends the message to geriatric potential murderers that you can go to jail no matter how old you are. :thumbu:
At least we can take comfort in the fact that the doddering old gibber is off the road for 5 years, which makes us all just a tiny bit safer.
Deepest Sympathy to his family and friends.

The woman is apparently a total arsehole. She shops ( or did until yesterday :thumbsu:) in the Waitrose store where my missus works. She is one of the rudest, most arrogant customers they've ever had, and believe me Waitrose staff are used to rude, arrogant people.
Perhaps she tried it on in court, who knows. I still think that 16 months is not enough when a life is lost and many more are shattered.

Why is it we get all this crap when a pensioner cocks up, but more peeps (including bikers) are killed and maimed by young or middle aged drivers? I agree she got what she deserved and should be off the road but her age had nothing to do with it. I will be 60 this December but I am a better rider/driver than I was at 15/ 30/ 45. I used to drive like a fucking maniac and ride the same but age has mellowed me and I just go fast now.......

reckon she was hard sentenced there, not because of what she did which is inexscusable, but COMPARED to what others get for similar type crimes.

so sorry for his family and friends, bet they were glad to see a custodial sentence, all sentencing should be made simpler so everyone gets the same.

Apologies for any offence Sir Ewok. On re-reading my piece I can see how my comments can be regarded as age-ist, which is ironic as I'm no spring chicken myself. Also, I have no arguement with your statistics. Far more people are killed by young dickheads that are killed by "old gibbers", but reference the lady in question, her actions amount to more than a "cock up". She killed a man!
The point that is irrefutable is that a persons eyesight, hearing, mobility and reactions deteriorate with age, but we are allowed to continue driving until WE think it unsafe to continue or until we do something serious enough to have our license taken away.
The lady in question could potentiallyhave passed her test in the 1950s and never undergone any driver training since. Presumably she filled in the requisite DVLA form at age 70 which allowed her to continue driving. There is currently no requirement for elderly drivers to take another driving test or to undergo any medical examination.
My grandad stopped driving at the age of 78 after he pulled out into traffic on a main road and was struck by a car travelling at a perfectly legal speed of 50 mph. He didn't see it. If that had been a bike, the rider would be dead. As it was both cars were written off and all parties suffered only minor injuries. My Grandad at the time had one functioning eye and one glass eye. He also had Parkinsons desease and heart trouble. We had told him on numerous occassions that he shouldn't be driving but he basically told us that he was a better driver than any of us as he had so much more experience. It was us young buggers that caused all the accidents. By the way, he blamed his final accident on the young guy that was driving perfectly legally on the main road when Gramps pulled out in front of him.
One final point. When the time comes that we are manifestly incapable of operating a motor vehicle safely. How many of us will have the balls or the good sense to voluntarily call it a day, and how many of us will stumble along blindly, deluding ourselves that everything is OK until the fateful day that we rob person of their life?

Surely that means that other sentences are too lenient, not that hers is too harsh?
Death by dangerous driving should mean life in my opinion. Might make a few of the twats think a bit before they drive like wankers

Thanks for that, the biggest problem is that when things go wrong for 'oldies', then the go seriously wrong. It went badly wrong during a drag race, for this one.......:thumbsu:

Surely the government must take urgent action now.
Notice that the poor old dear wasn't wearing a safety helmet. Also note the absence of airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners or side impact bars. Also, not sure a purple anorak constitutes high visibility clothing.
It's a miracle she wasn't killed!

P.S.
Sir Ewok. Where do you find stuff like this? It's chuffing priceless.
