My mate has recently bought a Suzuki RF900 which had been laid up for a while before he got it. It was ok at first but then both fork legs started weeping oil and since it's his first proper bike he got someone else to put new seals in. It's since been back to the shop twice in as many weeks and now the forks are pissing oil out again:mad:
Since the shop he's been using don't seem to be able to sort it does anyone know where I can find out how to strip and rebuild them for him? Apparently Haynes don't do a manual for that bike and my mate's too poor to buy the factory manual.

Check the fork legs for pitting or bends as that won't help the seals.

The shop may have even fitted the wrong size seals which is always an option.

As for doing it yourself, take your time. Without knowing the exact make up of the forks I would even start to tell you how to strip them. If you do attempt it use a digital camera to take pictures of each stage, this will help you putting them back together.

Not a lot of help I know but fork seals are easier than you think and you will save loads of dosh doing it yourself in the long run.

fit genuine seals as most patten ones are shit, dont use A.T.F as fork oil as its to thin

the cynic in me wonders if the bike shop haven't just used the hairdryer to heat the seals up trick, they shouldn't fail so soon if fitted correctly unless there is damage to the forks themselfs which I'd expect the shop to look for when fitting new seals. Either way I'd ask them to put it right and if not sorted consider getting trading standards onto the shop....

I've already checked the fork legs for damage (I've made that mistake before;)) and they're ok.
As for taking it back to the shop again I'll leave that decision to my mate, personally I've got no faith in them at all and I'd be more concerned that they may cause more damage. I know he'd like to get his money back but to be honest since it's not a huge sum this may prove to be more hassle than it's worth although reporting them to trading standards might be a just form of revenge.
Cheers for the link to the manual, that site looks well handy and I reckon I'll be using that again in the future:)

those seals are the same as the GSR750 and the 1200 bandit, sounds like the shop are screwing them up.

I have to do the ZZR this week but it looks like the right hand fork has a small chip out of it....:rolleyes:

Cheap after market fork seals blow quicker than a two dollar ho.

Always use the genuine article. It costs a few quid more, but lasts a hell of a lot longer by several years.

Check the stancion in the area of compression for wear with a vernier calliper. It should be no less than a certain diameter, check this measurement with your manual. If there's nowt wrong, the cunts have fitted cheap seals or even worse, done the hairdryer trick.

The bike hasn't done particularly high mileage so I don't expect to find excessive wear but I'll check it anyway. Do you think it's going to be an even reduction in diameter or am I looking for ovality caused by wear?

Check all round the stancion, the wear should be pretty even and consistent all round.
