i Have been looking for tech info on these engines, what it is i have sold one to a guy, it was a good runner when i took it out, had the heads ported aswel. But when he put it in his bike it rattles. Which i thought was a bit strange, even stranger this is the 3rd engine he has bought for the bike and all of them rattle.
It was in good working condition when it left me, It was flown up to him as were the other ones in an unpressurised freight plane (wandering if that has anything to do with it).
I can't remember if this engine is chain or gear driven cams, if it has a hydrolic cam/chain tensioner which could have depressuresed from being in the plane carge hold, causing the cam chain to rattle.
I know it was working fine before i sent it off, i even know the last 3 owners of the bike who said the same. For this to happen to 3 engines can't be coincidence, can it?

Hi Ken
All VFR750 engines have a gear driven top end. They can sound a bit noisy because of all the gears wizzing around but there is no camchain flapping about. There is no camchain tensioner so it can't be that.I have heard of people removing the quietening gears from the camshafts to lighten the valve train but cannot really see the point in it.This makes them a bit noisier. One thing that affected some really early engines was the rivets that hold the cam sprocket to the camshaft could wear and come loose but these were made a lot bigger quite early on(87?).These are pretty bombproof engines, one might rattle but not three in a row.
Just a thought,he is putting oil in the engine isn't he.

Brilliant, cheers for the info, very mutch appreciated:thumbu:. Yea i thought 3 engines in a row is a bit weird, especially when they all came from breakers. He has told me it is the drive train and will need replaced/fixed and will cost a few hundred £'s to do so, he said all 4 engines he has got has the same problem, so i asked him to get a mechainics report for the one i sold him Along with the garage number and address, and i will be able to speak to the mechainic directly.
The engine is a VFR750 F 1986 model calafornian/American import.
yea, the guy said the engine runs fine but doesn't like the noise.
I believe he has oil in them (hope so?), i told him the oil was drained and even gave him a free oil filter, he gets them installed in a local garage, and before they are installed he told me the mechanic also sets the valves.
Many thanks, Ken

Whats the betting that thats the answer to the noisy engine above

It's a whole lot easier to set the valves with the engine out of the frame. The inlets on the front two cylinders are a right arse to get at.At least the early ones are screw and locknut.
