having tried for some time to get my 1975 honda cb500t running .i have now decided to fit a newer engine into the frame the reason for this is i have spent a lot of money on the chassis doing repairs bearings shocks tyres fork seals etc. what i would like to know is does anybody know what would be a good engine to fit would a knew honda 500 twin fit .or would somthing els be sutible for the job .what ever i fit would ineed to change wireing the mechanics etc . and what components of the doner bike would i need. and also does anyone have the parts i need thankyou:thumbsu:

i have found a bmw k100 engine in the back of the workshop i think i might cut the frame and see if i can make it make the fork springs stronger and better rear shox . maybe it might just work:thumbsu:

i think i'd be more inclined to build a trike around that engine...

way fewer problems than trying to wedge it in the 500t frame

the k110 is way too long an dteh frame wont be strong enough to take the extra power - keep the 500T as it is and either run as is or sell on

flogging the whole lot as "part restored classic, little to do" in classic bike

Is the engine fubarred.

Do you just hate the engine?

How about a single in it?

What ever you fit is going to be an arse ache and with rivet counting classic "enthusiasts" paying top money -trike the bmw:D

the engine is actaully ok the only bad bit is the kickstarter feels a bit vague iam just having an ares ache with the nigly little bits i mentionend at the start of this thread .i dont know if it will sell it is a camo rat bike for the winter.that i am going to put a sidecar on that i havent built yet the only reson for changing the engine is because everybody says that it is a really unreliable engine.as for the bmw i have nearly all the bits to trike it i have just got to figure the wireing out .and finish the vw trike the kawasaki eliminator and the harley when these jobs are done i willstart the bm:thumbsu:

1. dont stick achair on it it will pull the engine to bit sin no time.

2. as for reliability it is a big mith - like most early hondas they had there problems which were almost all resolved - the 500 twin in good fettle was a good reliable stead - but like all early honda maintenence is crucial and must be ahered to religiously. There is one that a friend has owned from new that now has over 60000 onit and apart from normal servicing and a new cam chain is still giving sterling trouble free service

i have found a website called the fang and they drag race a super charged big bore cb500t so i have asked them for advice to it seems their not as bad as people say they are.with a little bit of work it may be quite reliable:thumbsu:

A lot of first year Honda's had problems, mostly cam chain issues,if the bike is still running ok now,i can't see why you're concerned.A lot of the "myth" surrounding these bikes IMO,is down to the brit bike crowd at the time, being upset at being thrashed on their 650's by a jap 500,or smaller.

Yes,i've had shedloads of brit's,and middleweight japs.:)

so maybe mine is a good one i do have a spare cam chain and adjuster and loads of spares this is why i decided to buil a rat out of it theirs no point having all these bits and not useing them:thumbsu:
