Police warning to bikers heading for Anglesey
Aug 23 2008 by Owen R Hughes, Daily Post
A MAJOR police operation will be staged on Anglesey to prevent bikers gatecrashing a showground that was to host a motorbike show this weekend.
The Anglesey Bike Show, which attracts 2,500 visitors and pumps thousands of pounds into the economy, was cancelled by the Anglesey Showground a week before the event was to start.
It followed police advice there was a risk of serious public “disorder and criminality” because of problems between rival gangs the Hell’s Angels and The Outlaws.
This was denied by organisers and local bikers who described it as “police fantasy”.
Police say that a significant presence will be at the site to prevent bikers accessing the showground.
Chief inspector Andy Williams said: “There will be a significant operation in place over the weekend at the site to ensure the integrity of the site. Our clear advice is do not attend this site; anyone who does will be sent back away from the site.”
Anglesey biker Blue Davies said: “The cancellation is a huge disappointment to bikers and a major blow to local businesses who would have benefited from this.
“There will be bikers who will come to Anglesey anyway and attend other events, some will probably still go to the site as well.
“People just cannot understand why this police advice was given as I have never seen any trouble at this show.”
Show organiser Steve Bennett, who has already been forced to cancel the Welsh National Show in Builth Wells, described the fears as a “police fantasy”.
