Until last week finding an insurance company (especially the top ones) to insure you for a trike while using a provisional licence was quite difficult, though some of the smaller ones would the package was very basic.
Last week bikesure couldnt give me insurance because im only currently classed as a provisional for manual trike because I passed my car test in an automatic, but today after a reading a reply on the NABD website Bikesure have just introduced a scheme for provisional licence holders (though this may only apply to the disabled or special circumstances)
So today I phoned them up again and finally got insurance for my Vmax1200 trike with european cover, full breakdown cover and a named rider for less than £200.
Im one seriously chuffed chappy at the moment.
Of course there was a long running battle with both the DSA and the DVLA to resolve what could and cant be done with my licence but im happy to report that was finally resolved this morning after 2 phone calls from a DVLA manager who informs me though the B1 is no longer issued they will apply it seperately to a licence under special circumstances.
Both licences (paper and photocard) have to be returned for this to be done, though no fee applies. you dont have to take a CBT, neither are you required to take a theory or awareness test you just need to book a test at a motorcycle testing centre, though the provisional B1 entitlement will last as long as your B entitlement does (ie no time limit to get the test passed)
Thought this may be of benefit to someone as im sure there are plenty of Auto only licence holders wanting to ride manually geared trikes.
