View Full Version : Tickover mixture too rich?

Since I've done the coil relay mod (see elsewhere) the bike runs much better, but starting from cold can still be a wee bit of a pain.Once it does start,I can shut the chokes off almost straight away and it'll tick over at 1000rpm.Could the mixture for the pilot circuit being too rich cause these symptoms? As I'm running S&B filters I have a LEDAR kit fitted to the carbs.Could the air corrector jets from this be restricting the air to the pilot circuit too much?

Adjust your pilot air screws if you want it spot on. Screw them all the way in, counting how many turns out they are, and then screw them out again. a quarter turn extra should do it on each, but half a turn extra might be necessary. IIRC your manual should give a figure of 1 1/2 - 2 turns out. Tis about normal. I trust your carbs are correctly balanced?

Aye Grav, they're balanced. The pilot screw setting in the manual is 2 turns out for the 550,I've got them at 2.5 turns out,but it's still too rich.Methinks that the air corrector jets are really restricting the flow so the screws ain't making much difference.I'm gonna remove them and put the screw settings back to standard.Thing is tho',would an over rich setting cause cold-start problems?
