my sisters pc will not start up if the broadband modem or the lexmark printer are plugged into the usb ports.
unplug them and it starts fine.
you can then plug them in and theres no problem.

a local shop wants £40.00 plus to sort it as they say it needs a disc as her pc is usb1 and the printer/modem are usb2.
well my mb is usb1 and i use the same modem and printer and i don't have the prob.

so any pc guru's please feel free to advise me.

thanks

are the USB ports enabled in the BIOS and have the drivers been updated ?

hi bill
the usb ports must be enabled i guess as they work fine .just that the pc won't start up whilst they are plugged in. but ok once pc has finished loading.
i will check for an updated driver though.
thanks

When did the problem start happening?
There are no compatabiltiy issues with USB1 and 2, just different transfer speeds.
It does sound like it could be resolved in BIOS. Look for PnP enabled, OS PnP compatable and similar...

This might help as i had the sameish problem, completely uninstall lexmark, then search for anything remotely to do with lexmark and wipe that too, then try to start the pc up with the modem, if alls well then its down to your printer, i have only ever bought lexmark and wont hear a bad word against them but for some reason if they decide to cause trouble they cause it on a bloody large scale, if this works you can try installing the printer again usint the disc that came with it, you can download the drivers off their website but if they have added any new stuff to the driver it could be down to that causing the trouble

thanks for the info guyver.
but the lexmark has only just been bought
this prob was already happening with the modem.
if the modem is unplugged the prob goes away.
but plug in the lexmark regardless of which of the 2 usb ports and the prob returns.

so we are sure its not the modem or printer.

i've already got a all in one lexmark. i like it also but larger capacity colour would be nice.
but i have found refilling instructions now so not so bad. :)

sounds like a BIOS or a USB driver problem to me. Also could mabye be caused by spyware/viruses, but a bit unlikely. Do other USB devices have this same effect? Lastly, are you plugging it direct into the motherboard? Into any hubs/extension cables?

the usb's are direct into the motherboard.
as soon as the blue welcome screen comes up you can plug them in and everything loads up fine.
start up with them plugged in and the pc stops just before the blue welcome screen. unplugging them then does not help you have to restart.

this unit also has 2 usb ports on the front i'm unsure if that makes 4 in all or maybe still just 2 with the option of plugging in the rear or the front.

About the only thing I do know regarding your USB ports is that you have 4, 2 at the front and 2 in the rear. They are seperate. Could try plugging into front one....

it sounds to me as if there was a problem when you installed the modem drivers.....

try removing printer modem software & hardware.

reboot the pc

run any spyware progs you have

download and install registry mechanic and run

select repair all known probs

reboot the pc

and then re-install your modem & drivers - following the manual - some you have to install the hardware 1st - some you have to install the software 1st.

hopefully your problem should be cured

yep what creature said
also try updating your Motherboard Bios
and if it uses the Via CHIPSET the update the 3 in 1 drivers
if the problem happened before the printer then it isnt that
the problem happens regardless of what you put in the USB ports so that rules out, any peripheral problems
the problems lay with the usb drivers or Mobo

do you run anything else of the USB ports?????

it sounds like whatever was installed first on the USB ports has maybe overwritten or corrupted the Usb Drivers
