Technically the cops shouldn't give you any information about reg no's. Fecking Data Protection Act. Any cop asking the control room for a PNC check has to justify why he wants it.
If you know a friendly cop he might bend the rules, but I would think your best bet is DVLA. Nothing is ever fecking easy is it?

You have to send off to the DVLA to get it officially. But... even then you only get the reg number, if you want the V5 you have to pay them money - i think it was about £70 last time Andy considered getting the gixxer sorted out. He knows the reg, but doesnt have the docs for it

I guess it must depend how long it is since it was last taxed and therefore on the road?
Andy's gixxer is only an M reg so fairly recent, but that said i'm surprised theres not any issues with it. He bought it off the previous owner after he found it dumped in some woods. Previous owner didnt want it back. No idea why Andy didnt get the V5 at the time tho - probably just had a blonde moment and didnt ask!

dvla WONT give you the reg number for a frame if you dont already have it. if you can get a document from, for example, a manufacturer or an owners club, prooving the year of manufacture, they may well give you an age related plate. but despite them having all the info on their website, they wont issue you with the original number for that frame. is there not an old tax disk on the bike? without the reg number, im afraid you are going to be in the position of applying for a log book with an age related plate.

So how come I know someone who's done it then?

if they got the original reg number back off the dvla without knowing it themselves, then either they got lucky or the dvla office near them is a sight more lax with the rules than my local office. cos dvla near me wouldnt give out the smell from their own farts!!

He wrote a letter to the DVLA in Swansea or where-ever they are based, and I've seen the letter he got sent back with the reg number. Also advising the form to fill out and fee to pay to get the V5.
