saw this in today's paper (from The Argus) :D

Storm in a teabag
A STORM was brewing today after the humble teabag was banned from council compost heaps because it has been classified as an animal by-product.
Householders in Cardiff have been told under European Union rules designed to combat a future foot-and-mouth outbreak products such as vegetables, coffee filters and teabags cannot be collected for composting. Teabags could
have come into contact with contaminated milk. The products can only be treated using a hightemperature composting system but few councils, and none in Wales, have them

yep I can understand that cos some folk insist on putting the milk in first (tea needs to infuse so water needs to be boiling, milk in first cools the water down so you get 'muddy' tea - yak)

but vegetables and coffee filters? um - can't see how they are animal by products.

everything raw and vegetable-like goes onto my compost heap, including newsapaper and eggshells

the old fashioned way

usually best way :D

Everyone in my Ma & Pa's area a few years back could get a free green compost bin from the council so they would then collect for compost. Then they stopped collecting because of the animal by-product thing, apparently even veg can pick up "germs" from chopping boards used for meat. My Ma called them and explained their whole household is Veggie, and they still didn't want to know.

What a waste of time and money first making, then dishing out the bins that now can't be used

Our local council hasn't got around to collecting compostable stuff yet, but we've had a green box for some years for newspaper, cans, and plastic bottles, but not glass.
Last year they sent a message round saying they were going to improve this service by collecting glass bottles in the green box - great! But also by NOT collecting plastic bottles any longer.

Well I dunno about you, but even an alcy like me actually gets thru more plastic containers of milk, squash, washing up liquid etc than I do glass bottles of wine, so I wasn't quite sure how this was an improvement. When I emailed the local council to ask them to explain how the new rules were better - guess what, no reply!

Tiger lily, drill holes in side of said wheelie bins, Viola! mobile aerobic composters.

BikerGran, spoke to our council recycling guys at a stand they set up in the town centre. I asked why I couldn't put any plastic in the green bin if it had the rycyclable sign on it. His answer, and it actually made sense, was that they only collected stuff that they could sell on to recycling companies and other stuff would just pile up (just think of the fridge mountains we had a short while ago).. If you can't get rid of it. you might as well use it as land fill. Germany has been ahead of the rest of Europe for years over recycling...
