See if it's got tippex on the flywheel? :D
I heard this from the mechanic that did our car's cambelt last week. Some mechanics mark their own timing marks in the stuff (the person that'd done it previously had used it).

Its a rover 200,1.4 16v
ive found the crank pulley marks and have no1 piston at tdc but its just the cam timing that i need to sort...rover being rover have two locating slots per cam sproket yet only one locating dowel, thus giving two possible options for refitting the cam sprokets...the dizzy is driven by the inlet cam and the cap can only be fitted one way,so should the rotor be facing no1 plug lead at top dead centre?if so thats the inlet one sorted but what position are the lobes on the exhaust cam at tdc?
i hate rovers and i hate the missus moaning at me that she aint got transport..
cheers

i did one of those engines a while back (headgasket and skim) i'm positive i didn't remove the cam wheels ...
i followed the instructions given in the haynes manual and made my own cam locking device out of a piece of box section, i also drained the oil out of the cam followers, dunno if they would have clashed valves had i not done so but wasn't prepared to take the risk....
i like working on the rover engines as they seem to be keeping me in pocket money reasonably well
