More bad publicity in the mainstream press, i wonder if Mr Paul Routledge will put as much effort into reporting all the charity work / easter egg runs etc that these 'loonies on 2 wheels' are responsible for...
I doubt it very much !

Dear sir, just a note to inform you that whatever you are paying Paul Routledge for his articles…it is far too much…This week he has read the BBC news report about 40% of bikers not paying road tax…without doing any research at all….his solution..make bikers pay one years road tax in advance…Where has this man lived all his life…has he never owned a motor vehicle…You should tell him the DVLA does not allow credit…anyone who owns a motor vehicle pays road tax in advance…Is he just ignorant or stupid…NOW some facts…I enclose a copy of an email that I sent to the instigator of the original report…I own two motorbikes and a car…even though I can only drive one vehicle at a time, BY LAW I have to Tax Insure and MOT all three vehicles..and I do… There are hundreds of thousands of bikers like myself who do the same thing….
Dear sir,
I have just read an irresponsible report by the BBC news in which they quote you as saying…Committee chairman Edward Leigh said: "Motorists and motorcyclists who refuse to pay road tax are stealing from law-abiding taxpayers and unlicensed cars are often associated with other forms of crime.
"Motorcyclists are particularly liable to evade road tax. Nearly 40% of motorcycles are now unlicensed.
"If the DVLA's motorcycle enforcement regime is not to be a complete laughing stock, then the agency and the department must make the most of new powers to enforce VED on public roads."
They must also "strongly consider more severe measures such as impounding unlicensed motorcycles", he said, adding: "Large parts of the biking community are cocking a snook at the law."
This statement is based on incorrect research and should be corrected….
Fact: more motorcycles are stolen than any other motor vehicle..
Fact: when a motorcycle is stolen and reported to the DVLA the date of tax liability dates from that date….so a motorcycle stolen in 2004 will show 4 years of liability to this date….
Fact: many motorcycles are SORNed during the winter and stored in garages because it is dangerous to ride on two wheels in snow and ice….These vehicles are included in your 40%
Fact: many motorcycles are made for children and are not legal for road use these are called ‘off road bikes’ these are also included…
Fact: quad bikes have recently joined the mini bikes as off road vehicles…The fact that they have 4 wheels should put them in the car category but they are included in ‘motorbikes’
In summing up..your researchers have included many motorcycles that are legally untaxed and vehicles that are not motorcycles…I strongly suggest that the true figure of illegally taxed motorcycles is nearer 4% than 40%...
A simple way of verifying my statement is to contact the DVLA with a vehicle inquiry for a car that has been owned by a member of your own family in the past and scrapped…and see what the date of liability is…
Yours truly,
John Hopkins
Now Show this to Paul Routledge…and get someone to read it to him…because he will be too lazy to read it himself…and then get him to interview the MP concerned..after verifying my facts…and do an honest report….

I think his mother **** in his mouth instead of slapping his arse.
I like your reasoned letter to him JH. Any sensible half intelligent person reading that would have a re-think about thier opinions. However, Routeledge is paid (Way too much), to write controversial crap about a lot of things he has no idea about. He works for the daily mirror a very second rate PC rag. I doubt if they will even pass on your letter.

Perhaps he should investigate the scandal known as "I never saw him" syndrome.... Bikers having accidents - only one i've ever had (proper one) was car not looking and hitting me.

I can't believe he is allowed to say such blatant lies and get away with it.
The magic word is apparently
apparently 40 per cent of motorcyclists are on the road without a tax disc.
The problem is catching them. They drive too fast and they wear helmets which disguise who they are - though that is one law they do obey.
There are actually very few bikes that can outrun a police car...and even those are easy to catch..the police have cameras and phones, they can phone ahead.
The DVLA in Swansea is hopeless. It fails to catch tax dodgers,
The DVLA are accountants, they sit in offices, it is not their job to catch anyone.
and the police couldn't care less about bike crime.
Try telling that to Bikers that have points on their licenses.
This man is wrong on so many levels. The trouble is he writes for a national newspaper, and thousands believe him.

It is the mirror, tabloids are a bane on society causing more harm to the individual than any thing else, all in the name of "The freedom of speech!"
"They drive too fast and they wear helmets which disguise who they are"
So make helmets optional...I guess not.
