Now that Jess our daughter is safely home after five month's on placement in China she has declared an interest in keeping a couple of rat's :). As this mean's commitment (ie it might stop her buggering off for a while again :o ) me and the missus have said go for it. Does anyone on here keep the plague spreading fucker's and can you recommend any breeders or where to buy some because she's after a 'husky roan' type of thing :eek:

I used to keep rats...just not for too long...back in the sixties we had a pet Boa Constrictor...I didn't fancy throwing dead rats in so I bought a couple of live ones...the breeding cycle of the rats is just right for the feeding cycle of the snake...just a suggestion....

or you could get her a ferret and tell her it's a whatever type of thingy she wants...lovely creatures ferrets... :D John

If you must get rats just get one...they get out...they destroy things and they breed every five seconds...also if you pay more attention to one than the other the strongest will eat the weakest...

Mark, Rats are crackin pets, they are clean and are very affectionate, they even purr like cats when they're content, we kept rats for a couple of years until we moved to the iom and was sorry to see them go, you need to keep the tank clean just like all small furry things....

The fancy rats link is proberbly your best best for finding a breeder in your area especially if your after a particular type.

Try to avoid pet shop rats as in my opinion their sources are not the best for healthy rats, they can be prone breathing problems as interbreeding happens (also it's not uncommen to buy a young rat only to find it's already pregnant)
Rats are excellent pets and great for getting rid of people when you answer the door with a rat on your shoulder :D

These percentages when added to the previous six years of statistics means that we show a year on year increase of 39% and 69% respectively for the years 1999 to 2005.
