did you know that as of the 1/1/05 you can get done five grand if you do any electrical work in your own house ie put up new light fittings add new sockets or rewire the old garage/shed etc. Electricians are like hens teeth to find now so you will not stand a chance if you need a new plug on the kettle. "ye mate can come round in two weeks and its fifty quid call out."

yeah I can see why it's a good idea to try and prevent inept people from touching anything like leccy, plumbing, walls, rooves etc

but at the same time it's a bit ridiculous if yer can't change a light fitting

then again how will 'they' know? probably only find out if it goes wrong and the house burns down, but even then you can claim it was like that when you moved in

a better idea would be to allow peeps to do one day courses at night school or summat and get a cert saying you can do this or that

hmmmm

bricklaying

actually 'they'd' be better off spending 'their' time and money getting rid of cowboy tradesmen who can do more damage than your average untrained Joe, and then charge you for it...!!

will you need to show a certificate to purchase items?

Doro
31-12-2004, 01:33 PM
in the fluffy world where I am queen yes you'd have to show your certificate to buy electrical stuff, and you'd only be able to buy things at trade

but in the real world it would be unenforceable cos B&Q would object and you could borrow your mates cert (or get him to buy stuff for you)

cor, imagine the blackmarket potential

ok, enough being bossy and hijacking threads, back to the topic.....

already it's difficult to change plugs cos they're all molded on these days, but at least the shops can't charge you extra for a plug like the stingy buggers used to

wait, does that mean u need an electrical engineer to change a bulb or fuse? that electrical work innit. Course, this makes a problem, we have cordless phones, which therefore need to be plugged in, so if the fuse blows, we cant call them and so were stuck without a phone  . Crazy...

Noooooooooooooo
A bit wrong that Danny. Part 'P' of the building control regulations come into force today. Changing existing fittings is ok as is adding sockets to an existing circuit. Wiring up a shed will require planning permission or be done by a certified person and work in certain 'special areas' such as Gardens, kitchens and bathrooms will be subject to the building regulations.

Nice one...

I was about to ask whether anyone had any actual facts on what 'they' say...

Cheers.

I'd like to know how much the council is going to charge for someone to come and check the work I've done, when you can't trust one of their lectricians to change a bulb.

GSX Hooligan

the council are subbing it out to local electrical contractors as they dont want the liability should they sign something off that ultimately turns out not to be........
