if ya want to try, try a live CD. theyre basically linux on a bootable CD, so nothing gets installed. Try SLAX (http://slax.linux-live.org) which is pretty good :)

if xp is slow and your on a modern pc - then you need to do some maintenance (yep just like ya bike!!!!!!!!!!!).

1.make sure your firwall is uptodate and configured properly.
2. make sure your antivirus program is uptodate ( even do a manual scan).
3. download adware & spybot - this will sort all those nasty cookies, trojens & spyware out.
4. download bugbuster - this will sort out most of your problems

altho firefox is a lot better in many respects at can take upto 28% of your system resorses - this will greatly reduce the speed of xp.

even when you are not using it - it is drawing resorses away from xp and other more important drivers/progs.

this is especially important if ya either on a slowish pc (anything below amd 1600 or equivelent itel cpu) & also if you got less that 512 meg of memory will make xp crawl.

if ya can give more pc hardware details and what software you are running - may be able to help you further

knoppix is pretty good too. In xp, go to my computer on desktop, right click and select manage. expand the services and applications box and select services. Schroll through and check anything that is listed as automatic - these start with windows. Anything you dont use, click stop and then change startup type to manual (so if it is needed, it will start itself). This will speed it up no end, if your on broadband disable the browser cache, and if you got a load of ram disable virtual memory, or at least set it to use a second drive (i have a gig of ram and no swap file, works fine)

If you want a fast browser, use opera! - you wont get any quicker, also while your getting rid of micro**** products, use eudora for your mail.
