So The government wants one of the end verses re-written (nobody ever sings it anyway ) and the new version to be inserted takes into and mentions, our ethinic populus. I guess that just about it then - no hope - nothing to call our own anymore.

Have to admit I'm not particularly fond of the royals but the nation anthem was ours, now we gotta share it with rag heads and such like. So we'll end up just having a 'anything goes' anthem :(

As stated in another thread on this, the Anthem should be Rule Britania

I think that whoever thought up that little bit of wisdom should fuck right off.

There's nowt wrong with our National Anthem, leave it alone.

where does it say that the govt wants to re write the national anthem? this is another typical tabloid hysteria story, good old jingoistic propoganda. as i read it, one lord, one single member of the house of lords, the former attorney general, lord goldsmith, suggested that "there may be some problem with later verses of the anthem" as a personal comment. then he waffles on about inclusiveness and other twaddle. in fact, the only official government quote i can find about the whole story is this one, and its hardly a ringing endorsement is it,

"This does not reflect the Government's views. We are proud of our national anthem and the traditions it represents."

lets not fall into the trap of believing any story thats anti govt purely on face value. every time i see a similar story to this, i just want to know the source, invariably its either the mail, the express or the sun.!!

I heard it on the radio today and they said The Government. I havent had time to read the paper today and by the time I get around to it, it'll be history anyway. :)

Sun typically over reacted and started its story off as "Gordon brown is going to,,,,,," when in reality, it wasnt gordon brown, nor was it a member of the cabinet, nor was it even a member of parliament who said it. it was a labour peer who suggested it, and the papers took this as "labour is DEFINATELY going to MAKE us all sing about immigrants" etc etc, cos that kind of crap sells papers, and some people will believe it as fact even though its bollox, because it suits their own prejudices.
