How do you find out what you should be getting. I'm with BT

Ran the test meself and supposedly getting nowhere near what I pay for but tested on another site and although not what I pay for it's a lot closer.
The problem with these test sites is that once they are popular they can't support the number of connections and so they give inaccurate results. Due to that if they genuinely are campaigning for better speeds that kind of result will help.

I think that if you look in the small print with a lot of providers you will find that the Connection speed is governed by distance from the Exchange as the performance falls off down the copper wire the further you are away......You can be paying for a high speed connection and actually be connected as a high speed connection ..but this means nothing if you are above a certain distance from the exchange.......Unfortunately thats how it all works...

thats correct but not if your on cable you should be getting what it says so 2meg means 2meg

now its early morning and quiet, im getting 9.4 meg download, and still half a meg upload.
A better speed test (http://www.kbps.co.uk/)
but you need to be a bit geeky... :D
Run any test several times to get a good average, running it once dont mean diddly

The other thing to bear in mind is that when you're doing the speed test you should be doing nothing else that's internet based (browsing/downloading emails etc)

The Upload Speed is fixed.....

The Upload Speed is fixed.....Indeed. The A of ADSL is Asynchronous. The upload and download speeds are different. Your download speed should be close to the 'whatever' Meg speed your ISP states (subject to distance from exchange and all that). You upload speed is going to be one of 256Kb or 512Kb.
If you want to upload at the same speed as you download, you need to buy SDSL - which will cost you a fortune (between £150 - £300 per month last time I checked).

I live a fair way from the telephone exchange and WAS paying my ISP for 8mb connection UNTIL I sussed out BT were only giving me 2mb. That's fine and I got a refund (3 months credit from ISP) :D
So now I am only paying for what I am getting.

Download speed's shown as nearly what it should be.
Have to say though, I agree with what was written above about the speed of connection to the site slowing with use and therefore the test being inaccurate.

There's also the issue that on the faster cable download speeds the small amounts of data the web tests use isn't going to max out your data allowance. A better way is to simultaneously download 4 large files and then add the download speeds together to get a truer picture.
Then you can also add in things like where the server doing the testing is. If it's in the land of the big mac and your on Virgin it'll probably misread because they've recently been having problems with their connection to the states - probably not paid the carrier enough!
It's a whole can of worms and full of "reasons" that the ISP's can give to explain the readings. At least the Advertsiing Standards Authority are already doing something about it and I think there's a Commons Committee looking at it too. The Gadget Show are only really using it to gain popularity and joined the campaign late!

Check your small print folks... it's "up to x Mb/s"
Always has been.
7.75Mb/s here, paying for... well, a fiver a month to piggyback my neighbours connection...
