CHRISTMAS DAY

I woke up one christmas morn, Santa had not been
I was young enough to still believe, an' wise enough not to make a scene
My daddy lay asleep downstairs worse the wear for drink
An' mum retouched her make-up at the mirror 'bove the sink

I learned really quickly there are some things you don't say
It was just another childhood christmas day

There was no church for us that day, there very rarely was
My mama and my daddy say they don't believe in god
I only had their prescence once they'd settled with a drink
An' there would be so many more before they'd sleep a wink

I learned really quickly all the games for one to play
It was just another childhood christmas day

My daddy wern't no violent man 'cept when he touched the drink
An' I would try to wake him an' my mum'd say hey stop and think boy

I learned really quickly just to leave him where he lay
It was just another childhood christmas day

Then dad came home one christmas eve, come home with a tree
An' presents for my mum, an' one or two for me
We made some decorations an' we hung 'em on that tree
An' mum cooked up a chicken 'cos we couldn't afford turkey

An' I learned really quickly there might be some other way
It was like no other childhood christmas day
