Wot about Babylon 5 then?

Or am I in the wrong thread?

Grav
18-12-2004, 11:10 PM
Babylon 5, a thoroughly splendid sci fi series, is usually found on Bravo at lunchtime. Mr Farty Pants was looking for summat good to watch at 8 pm.

Is any thread the wrong thread? am I indeed typing the wrong thread now? do i really care? does the world revolve in e retrograde direction if you get out of bed on the wrong side every alternate tuesday? would anyone notice? ;)

On the contrary my good man, Babylon 5 was a breath of fresh air in the (at the time) stagnant world of Sci Fi TV programming. Paramount felt a response was in order and DS9 and Voyager where born. All thanks to Babylon 5.

Here endeth the lesson. ;)

'Tis a pity they cut the funding though,Crusade could have been good.Same with Farscape.

Grav
19-12-2004, 12:56 PM
Yep, Crusade was a decent spin off with a storyline based in B5 that could have been better funded and promoted. Shame it was dropped after 1 series as it would have tied up a lot of lose ends and subplots left open from B5 and rounded out the franchise rather nicely.

Farscape is bonkers! It's a strange mix of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Star Wars, Star Trek and Red Dwarf IMHO, and it works very well indeed. As far as i know it's still in production and has become a cult classic.

Dougie

They're supposedly making a film which should explain a few things and bring it to a satisfactory ending(notice I said SHOULD).The Looney Tunes ripoff episode was possibly one of the funniest things I've seen on a sci-fi show!

Babylon 5 was a shallow attempt by warner to disthrone the splendor that was Next Gen... !

Warner only picked up B5 after Joe Stracinsky (or however you spell his feckin' name - anyroad, the bloke who wrote the later series of He-Man and Murder She wrote!! I'll get me coat :D ) went round to everyone including paramount with his idea for a SF series based on a space station - they all turned him down. Funny that DS9 came about soon after B5.

Warners themselves only acted as Distributor for the series, it was made for a Cable TV channel, part of the Turner empire. Every year, the cast and crew of B5 were never sure if they'd get another season due to the american ratings shambles so they made the end of the series at the end of the fourth season, but they got lucky and got the fifth season so they could finish it properly - over here, a season runs every week for 22 or so weeks, but over in the states, they show four or five episodes in a row, have a week or so off due to some shighty basketball game or the world series and then start showing the next few episodes during 'sweeps' week and only if they get the ratings needed, the series continues.

Which is why Crusade got the plug pulled on it - it was dropped by the original network, Sci-Fi Channel bought it (If I remember right), tried making loads of changes including the script (The pilot - A Call to Arms - looked totally different than the series looked at the end) and all enthusiasm was lost and it bombed due to lack of exposure from the new network, so only 13 episodes were made, which channel 4 stuck in a really late night slot for some odd reason (so I missed most of it anyhow!!)

I think they should have stuck with B5 anyway, cos it rocked!! As far as the plot holes, it's like asking what happened to Bilbo Baggins at the end of Lord of the Rings after he went off on the elven ship

Farscape got canned a year or two back sadly - I'm not even sure if Beeb 2 have showed it all yet?

FireFly was more superior to babylon 5 Voyager and DS9 just carried on the franchise....proof of the pudding...wheres Babylon 5 now?....3 o'clock in the mornin with other non-descript series of the same ilk like lex! on some dodgey cable channel.

btw i think so far Enterprise is cack..

here endeth Gravs enlightenment. :p

If it was so superior, where is it now? B5, Star Trek and Farscape are all still shown here in blighty.
Voyager and DS9 just carried on the franchise

Indeed they did, but might not have been made had it not been for B5 breathing life into Sci Fi TV at a time when it was in decline, therefore introducing a new level of competition an innovation which gave the genre a kick up the arse that it sorely needed.

Yep, cant be bothered watching it anymore.

On the contrary my good fellow, the path to wisdom is long and fraught with danger is it not? Yet we continue our quest to find summat good to watch on TV.

And on the next episode............. :D

Do the words..'Too Cranial' mean anything to ya...that was how the original star trek series was percieved in america...done pretty crap so far innit.. :D
Firefly does'nt have the special effects of the big boys...that don't mean it would'nt do well this side of the pond.

Don't see how as most the sci-fi fraternity did'nt even take it seriously, i remember seeing the reviews..
I will however agree that the plot was better in the the first and second series than it was with the first series of voyager when they overplayed the holodeck episodes.

Okay, changing tack slightly,I have very vague recollections of a very VERY dodgy sci-fi show in the mid to late sixties called (I think) Phoenix 5.I've tried looking it up on the web but there're too many hits to trawl through. Was there such a show or was it all a dreadful figment of my fevered imagination?

So, Guffy drawers, the new incarnation of Battlestar Galactica, Is it a definite improvement or should they have left it well alone?

Nooo i think its very good so far...its more psycological and thriller than your average sci-fi don't you think?
Altho we thought the film pilot was about 40 mins too long...what an ending tho.
No its made me think of Glen A Larson in a whole new light.

The old one went down hill when they made it to earth IMO.

Yep it is very psychological indeed, I reckon it has definitely improved on the original, prolly cos the age groups the two versions are aimed at are different and at the same time they are the same people. The original was aimed at kids but this new one is aimed at 25/40 year olds, who, surprisingly enough, were the kids the original was aimed at. Clever eh.............. ;)

The SFX are oustanding and without High Definition TV it is quite difficult to see where the CGI starts and the "Real" stuff ends. Very well done.

Anyway, onto the important stuff. Which Cylon do you fancy, The Blonde or the Oriental? :D

Figured you might...... :D

The plot is full of paranoia on Battlestar Galactica at the moment and that scientist bloke having a cylon in his mind doesnt help matters much. She keeps trying to seduce him!

Did you see the episode a couple of weeks back about the prison ship rebellion? It had the guy who played the original Apollo in a starring role. Good to see them getting some of the old actors involved.

Yes nice touch was'nt it.

I'd never considered the generation angle of us kids watchin it, and now us kids watchin it...i mean adults watchin it.

yeah very clever..
