Just a thought but anyone got any usefull get you home tips for our bikes?

Ill start, if your battery aint got enough juice in it to get you home and there's no jump leads around, go pour a teaspoon of vinegar in the battery, it reacts with battery acid and may just give you the extra needed to get the bike running.
It handy to know if your on a soaking wet grass field and you cant bump start

Get You Home Tricks

1. Carry mobile phone (charged)
2. Have number of AA/RAC/Green Flag etc
3. Enter number 2 into number 1 and job done! :D

The acetic acid will make the battery recover enough if you have a kickstart, but unlikely if electric, it will leave a load of contaminents in it though, defo shorten the life of the battery.

Carry a tube of super glue under the seat, you can do minor repairs and even repair a small puncture enough to get home (if you are careful)

Carry two hose clips. If your throttle cable breaks, use on to attach the remains of the cable to the twist grip, an the other one to clamp the outer to the handlebars. :D

I did it, and it lasted 3 months before I bought a new cable :)

A 2p can be arldited to a holed bsa piston and kept running for several months until a new piston is fitted!! :D

if the nipple breaks off your throttle cable you can file down the pin in a 240v plug to the same shape and use that :D

We did it on a mates Zed a few years ago, got him home but battery was screwed.
But if you aint got recovery or jump leads its an option

Works on 250DX's as well although it does make the engine unbalanced.....but use a ten pence the metal holds up better..... not ten one pences either..

a self tapper screw can fix a puncture on a tubless tyre .... cheers Mr French Bloke on way home from Le Man in 98 ..... always have one in me tool kit now

However, if caught without hose clips - unscrew your right hand switchgear a little, put the broken end of the cable into the gap, screw it back up again, wrap the cable around the twistgrip and grip with your glove.

Only works if the nipple comes off the top end though --- just don't let go of it in traffic! :cool:

Or once when my throttle cable snapped on my BSA 441SS I tied the end of the cable to the top buckle on my right boot, just moved my leg to operate the throttle, worked fine until I put BOTH legs down at the lights...

Been there done that, funny for everyone else

Always worth carrying a tube of chemical metal with a small g-clamp, fixed plenty with that stuff.

Also electrical cable with clips well good for by-passing breaks in wires etc

Or you could put the bike on the centrestand and shove it in gear and spin the back wheel...but this takes plenty of practice before you try it in a field...John

Ring RAC/AA just as it's about to rain and tell 'em you've got an intermittent electrical fault. ;) :D

Chemical metal. Bloody good stuff. Make nuts out of it if req or use it to fill slightly damaged an' weepin' casings.

Lost my rear brake pedal bolt on the way to Wales last summer. Vibrated loose an' disappeared on the M4. Didn't notice 'till I was pullin' into the services for petrol. Buggersh!tfuckcunttosstitwank !!! Filled up, got a coffee an' had a think.

Largest allen key I had. Made up bobbin out of electrical tape, smeared it with a little oil from my then minor oil leak. Pushed it thru the frame mount an' the pedal an' clamped it up with small molegrips. Job done, got me to Wales an' home again.

Large cable ties, gaffa tape, electrical tape, multi tool, various spanners an' a plug spanner. That an' a RAC card for when I can't sort it an' I've got all I need ....

Carry a cable repair kit,or at least a couple of solderless nipples for clutch AND throttle.It's rare that the engine end of the cable goes but if it does,10-15 mins and yer on yer way.

Most tin foil is plastic now...but you can squeeze a bit of wire into the fuseholder and hold it in place with the blown fuse....use one strand first..then two.. you dont want the loom to burn up...John
