has anyone here worked in the UAE or mid east?

I am exploring the possibility of mixing business with travel and know that I can earn squillions in the middle east.. just not sure of the cultural bit as I've only been in dubai for 2 days and Oman for a month when I was a nipper. :o

Never worked directly with the ragheads, but have spent months out there on and off with the navy. Dubai in the UAE is quite relaxed and westernised, as is Bahrein. Saudi should be avoided like the plague. Kuwait was in a bit of a state last time I went and I have never surrendered to Iranians.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi been pro-west for years (and tourist income is important to them). Oman is very relaxed with regard to alcohol (all things being relative).

Important to remember if you take a laptop - make sure you've nothing in it which might be considered indecent (includes "page three" type pics). Also, leave your 100% Biker and other such mags at home - I got a bollocking off Pat a few years ago cos I saved me mags up to read on ship - then the Omani Customs ripped all pics of scantily clad ladies out of every issue. :o

There is a big market in Gas and Oil , but its not as simple as rolling up and walking into a job there... ALL ex-pats are hired in their own coutry, and then flown to work there. Only locals get walk in jobs, and they pay peanuts..

Also the Oil and Gas business is bloody hard to get a start in, and there are so many folks now with experience its not as easy to get a start as it was when i worked in it... and it was tough then..

My sister works in Dubai - you wouldn't catch me over there, way too hot and anyway I'd never leave Blighty now!
She said it's ok, you can pretty much do what you want but you are in big trouble if they catch you eating or drinking in public during Ramadan.
The heat is terrible though, too hot for comfort. She's only doing it to save up enough money for an extension on her house.
Saudi should be avoided like the black death!

I'd have thought these days going to the middle east's a bloody good way to get shot/blown up/kidnapped and beheaded/you fuckin name it.

People always seem highly shocked and surprised when tourist buses, workers and the like get blown or kidnapped up but it's been happening in a lot of these places for decades - surely since the war on terror it's got to have got more rather than less dangerous.

If you really want to do it then good luck to ya and safe travelling, but no amount of money would be enough to get me over there (and no, I don't earn loads over here, I'm on a fairly shít wage as it goes).

Historically the way to the east was via submarine cables. expensive to lay, expensive to repair and bastard slow. ?turkey has recentky started a bidding war for rights to lay fibre across the country. once that cable i=s laid there will be a high bandwidth easy to repair overland optin to the east via the middle east ...see

i'm talking more generally about workin g abroad not specifically the middle east. I have wolrked i n prague and the us and have had opportunities across europe in recent years. i also think it all adds to the greater experience...

they pay for your flights stick you in a very nice hotel with good gym. cheap fags and beer

they throw monies at you and give you a bouns just for going to work

you get to blast crossers over the sand in your time off .

but then you could stay in wales be cold work for peanuts and not get to see new places and people which have helped make me a better person I know where i would go ps old harleys are cheaper out there !!!!!

you could also use the monies to buy homes in polland etc starting at £2,500

Point is much of what they hire us to do locals cannot.
We have the experience and get it wrong an people get hurt and die.
But local hotels,apartments,bars etc get a nice wedge of business.
