Been told to give up smoking cos it's bad for healing bones....

Smoking reduces the lungs ability to pass oxygen into the bloodstream and increases carbon monoxide level, thus poisoning your blood and reducing your bodies regenerative ability to repair damage to your bones. So i'm told.
Smoking cannabis is also bad for you as it also raises the level of carbon monoxide just like smoking an ordinary cigarette. The only difference is that cannabis is a natural tranquiliser and releases tension in the muscles which contributes towards pain when recovering from a broken bone. So i'm told.

I'm giving up rollies over Xmas, a colleague of mine has just been diagnosed with aggressive jaw cancer and has to have half her face removed, even then the prognosis is poor.
She has smoked all her life and is only 40.

Question? patches, are they just a placebo or do they really work?

SO FECK OFF AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

i read once that nicotine improves your reactions and also *coats the sheath which covers your spinal chord so helps prevent MS and the like
*coats it or prevents wear
when I tried to give up with patches I found the lowest dose ones were giving me more nicotine than the fags, I could taste it in my mouth - yak
will power usually does it for me :)

Getting back to the healing of bones etc. Excessive alcahol can reduce the healing power of the body as well. Guy I knew got blown up on a gas powered fork lift and ripped his achilles tendon. He was regularly drinking 12-13 pints a night and eventually the wound ulcerated. He had to have his leg put into an oxygen tent to oxygenate the wound area to help with the healing. Took ages to mend.

On the other hand, my doc said that alcohol is good for fractures - except when it causes them! ;)

Not in excess, I shouldn't wonder. Alcahol in excess reduces the bloods ability to carry oxygen to the injury site. As with all engines (the human body is basically an engine) it needs the right amount of fuel and oxygen.
A couple of shorts or beers won't do any harm, but six or more is a little too much, especially if you are on crutches!!!! :o

Yeah, thing is, after 14 months of not healing, | got to try everything I've been told - this is my last chance before they start building scaffolding round it!
biker gran I take it it's your bone that's not healing? Have you tried any vitamin supplements or herbal remedies? I worked in medical physics years ago and they used magnets to heal bones, it worked too, trouble is you need to use the exact right strength of magnet, I will try and find out what it is, though you may have trouble finding a shop that sells magnets according to their telsa rating...!!
I think vitamin B12 will help, high strength. Don't get the multiple B complex though cos high levels of B6 are toxic. Also try zinc and magnesium and selenium (for best level eat 3 brazil nuts a day - if you like em).
ginko bilboa are good for circulation so they may help, also amino acids, L-glucamine (I think that's right)
a good herbal remedy is comfrey, aslo called bone seal, you aquire some from somewhere, herb garden, woods, whatever. Pound the leaves until the sap comes out and apply to the affected area, cover with a warm towel or dresing, change for fresh stuff every couple of hours. This is like a poultice. Obviously you could prob only do it while at home. I have no idea if it works, but it's an old herbal remedy.
do a google search and see what you can find
me? never trusted Dr's as have had too many bad experiences

Wow thanks Doro - shoulda posted here months ago!
Can't do the comfrey thing cos I'm in plaster! My new consultant who's an expert with bones that don't heal (he's also Irish and rather cute!) has put me onto vitamins etc, also taken me OFF the anti-inflammatory drugs I was put ON in the hospital where they originally set my leg cos apparently they can inhibit healing...
However this afternoon it seems the painkillers are finally starting to work and I feel much better! It will hurt cos I'm walking round on a broken leg in the hope that the weightbearing will help kickstart the healing process, yes ouch but it will be worth it if it works! I just want to get back on the road!
