Hey, In april I'm gonna have about £900 to spend on a bike, and insurance (I'm under 25 and live in LS6 leeds, so I'm fucked really. I should be using it to pay back my third student overdraft, but I thought fuck it, I'll treat meself.) What do people reckon I should get? I need to get classic insurance so age is a factor. I was thinking a CX500 or possibly a VF400. maybe a 250. I've got a Yamaha Maxim X at home, so that's the sort of bike I'm after. (although not as big)

The VF will probably take most of your budget in insurance. Stick with a 250, the CX's can be expensive and difficult to repair. Radiators and waterpumps being prone to damage and collapse.

i have a cx 500 custom survival bike, best £300 i ever spent. parts are cheap, they are cheap to insure (£124 full comp) good fun to ride and will still be going whwen all others are steaming at the road side.
i'd say get yourself a cx, you wont regret it, i prefer the cx to the bandit to be honest.

GO STRAIGHT AWAY TO THE BATHROOM AND WASH OUT YOUR MOUTH WITH SOAP :D
cx's are fine theres a very good owners club in the uk. they have a website somewhere.
alternators can be iffy as can cam chains especially the later auto tensioned models, as the auto tensioner often does'nt,

I was actually lookin at superdreams too. I can insure one for under £300 so I've got plenty to customise it with. on that matter, will a 'dream engine (or other engine) fit in a CB125s frame? actually it's a cb100 frame, but the bike came with a cb125 and a TL 125 motor. I'm doing it up (read: ressurecting, wont even manage field use any more) so wen it's all spangly I mite bung a bigger motor in.
EDIT: was lookin at the bible (used bike guide) looks like the 250n will reach90 on a good day. is this true, how can I tune one (if i go down the 'dream road I can possibly spend £200 on "non-cosmetic adjustments" and again, would a bigger engine possibly fit in? a 350/400?)

Yeah,for the dream(nightmare?) !!
If(and thats a BIG IF)my 'addled braincell still works,the cb400n motor fits the cb250n frame,but I'm not 100% sure............. :o
How far is this from you.........

LOL I just been looking at that one, and the other superdreams on ebay. That's what I'm after though really. and don't worry about me gazumping you, I'll not have the money till april!
I was thinkin' about that, coz there are better 400's about so it'll be cheap, but the frame and reg numbers are still 250 (It was like that when I got it, mr insurance man) the 400n is a twin isn't it? The 4oo/4 wouln't fit?

CX Alternators iffy, nah whatever gave you that impression  (me stuck at side of Junction 8 M1, 1992 while Alternator and CDI went tits up on me!!!!!)
Though saying that, it was the only bike I could easily rebuild the engine on my own after the waterpump gasket went - thanks to the tosser (mechanic who soon after went out of business - for some reason) who replaced said alternator without changing the gasket (cost 35p), causing water to get in the oil!!

No worries,I nearly allways get my bikes from the scrappies !! :D
Anyway we're not lookin' in the same sector. ;)
Just bolt the bugger in,send the V5 off with the new engine no./cc. changed and your sorted.Even a 400N can't cost that much to insure !!! :D
Helas,the 400/4 won't fit without a "few" modifications.

If you can get one in good(ish) nick a GS550 is a good buy.Okay, the charging system is sh!t but can be sorted with a Superdream reg/rectifier.Tha motor is tuff as old boots, mine has about 105000 miles on it with only one rebore.keep changing the oil and filter and it'll run for ever. They ain't fast or quick handling but they can be fun.

Course it is, downhill with a following wind......

Yep, the 400 Superdream engine is basically the same engine as the 250 - one is bored out or sleeved down, can't remember which but it dont matter. My 400 Superdream has been known to do 110.
