and every 'British subject' was eligible for call up, and now that women are equal too, what would the parades look like with all the burqahs and turbans and saris..Or would Britain suddenly get a lot emptier!.. John

Reckon that certain types would be exempt from it on religous grounds.

Don't know about the Boys Brigade haven't heard anything about them for years. The rest are still going tho'. Last year I read on a military aircrew forum that the biggest branch of the R.A.F. is now the Air Cadets. :) A friend of mine's son is in the local Army Cadets and some evenings in the summer on a walk by Ramsgate Harbour you can hear & see the Sea Cadet band learning to play & march at the same time. :D

I have seen Sikhs in the army wearing turbans in regimental colours.Remember, they are a warrior race and have served this country proudly in both World Wars.
And they like their beer........ :D

Question:

Do people really join the army/navy/airforce without the knowledge that at some point they may have to shoot someone or be shot at?

excellent idea. every person (male/female) between 18-35 does 3 years min. service, NO exceptions.

Why 35?

Just because your 40 doesn't mean you can't do the job.. I would say up to 50 depending of physical fitness.

No,seriously, looking around at the 'Youth Of Today',I wouldn't trust most of them with a knife and fork, never mind an SA80.Give 'em a pick or shovel and they'd really only be a danger to themselves.

here's a sensible thought from me. rare but hey.

If they have now raised the age of educationual school leaving age to 18 w.e.f. 2013, why not offer those who do not want to do the academic continuation at 16 + national service til 18 years, and offer them military based, vocational training, so they come out with the basics of a trade, and a choice of whether to sign up full time or get a job with those qualifications.

Just a thought. Think the ceiling on it should be 21, and should be equal sexes, have no religious or gender and sexual orientation bias. But anyone who offends in the youth age bracket or under say 25 instead of youth offending team stuff and probation.. they go on service again even if they did it before.

the bit I liked was the idea from the ministry that those not continuing in education or training or getting a job would be penalised by having their driving licenses revoked. I can see that really making a difference
