Its quite simple, think about it,

Scooter = childs toy which you step onto and scoot along,
Scooter= a childs moped which you step through and scoot along on.

Both look simmalar and go just as fast as eachother.

Ok its because they break down so regularly they sit side saddle on em and scoot along in a simmilar manner. And sled because they make the same scraping sound when you take em round a bend :D
