Now I always thought of these as seventies style chops but on the american sites they call them diggers with them seeming to be linked with the Bay Area in the 1970's. They seem to be going through a bit of a revival over there as well. So is this the next big trend in custom bikes here?

they have some funny names for things, a mate was over from kansas, saw my old triumph with fat front tyre and said that he loved the "catsmasher" front end???

When I saw digger bikes I though great either a load of bikes ridden by archaeologists or 17th century libertarians. Boy was I confused

The Yanks might have coined a name for them, but an Englishman built two of the best... :)

Them's the kiddies. Also the Kwak trike with IRS that John built many years ago.

Its really interesting seeing them having a resurgance as its a style that if any, I,ve personally aossicated with unridden show bikes but they clearly developed from drag influenced street bikes. And I've always had a soft spot for prismic tanks. I remember one from the 80's in BSh called, I think, Avalon which I fell in love with.

There seems to be two or three builders in the States dabbling with that old 1970s style - Chica from Chica's Custom Cycles did one last year.

Hmmm...

I wouldn't have siad those were Diggers. They're more what I think of as "Bay Area Lowriders", which sort of grew out of Diggers.

The third pic in the first post,

http://www.lowridersbysummers.com/bikes/sum6.jpg

is a guy called Tom Summers, who is known as Lowrider Tommy, and has a shop called "Lowriders by Summers" which tends to back that idea up a little... :)

Here's a link to his site, which has a farily big gallery of bikes he's built..

Loriders by Summers (http://www.lowridersbysummers.com)

I always thought of Diggers as being more like this...

Though possibly with a Mustang tank being more typical. The Drag bars are essential though....

Oh, and if you haven't ever seen it, that photo is lifted from Hondachopper.com's gallery.

The menu is a little weird it sort of slides in from the top left hand corner

I ran over a cat on a gilera cougar 125 once. it didn't mash it, neither did the back wheel.

i've always liked the seventies stuff. music as well as the bikes. It's good to see it done well , I particularly like the paint detailing. Some of it reminds me of the Gypsy artwork on long boats / barges / wjhatever they're called.

Mickey Russell's bikes were very influenced by that.
