so, 20 years after the last music massacre what has been achieved in africa? not a lot me thinks. are they starving in asia? no. north or south america? no. europe? anyway you get my drift. potentially africa could be such a wealthy continent as it is rich in minerals, oil, diamonds etc etc. the fundamental problem with africa is its tribal conflicts and wholesale corruption. why should the wealthier nations keep pouring money into a continent that can't or won't look aftr itself?. ps. this is not a rant and i do not mean any offence but the question is valid. :)

I agree, if their government sorted themselves out, sorted out a contraception programme etc life for them would be better and I'd be more inclined to want to help. Although I hate to see all those starving kids just like everyone else, I get very angry when I see pics of mums with starving kids at their breast that they cannot feed, yet that same woman is already pregnant with another poor little bugger!! If you cannot feed what you have... why the hell have more!!

Fair point but ,don't forget that a lot of the corruption is caused by OUR gouvernments and multi-national companies.Who have(and still are)pumping all the resources from these "potentially developing" countries.

I know whay you mean - I used to fund-raise for a branch of Save the Children. One of their sayings was "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day - teach him to fish and you feed him for life"

But it's a bit difficult to learn to fish if you're dead!

There's enough food in the world for everyone - I don't mind giving a bit to help redistribute it. I agree that the govts of those countries have a lot to answer for - but the people at the bottom of the heap don't have much say about that (as ever). I think they've got as much right to live as we have.

Couple of things from me: I agree with most of the replies and think that if they feel that they need to raise money for charity, then they should concentrate on the people in this country that need help.
Secondly the record: Do they know its Christmas ? Most of the money will go to non christian countries, so no they wont know it's christmas cos they dont feckin celebrate the birth of the great beardy one.
Lastly: If they are going to raise obscene amounts of money from us, then spend it on something usefull, like a sterilisation project.that will do more towards helping these people.
Oh and one last thing, make em eat all those cows wandering around,religious beliefs are one thing, starving to death is another.

After just spending 78 hours in the local co-op trying to raise money for the poppy appeal I know how difficult it is to raise money for charities.
why are all these wealthy stars asking for our money by making a remake of an old song, why cant they give some of the many millions that they are worth to the cause.

I have worked and visited family in the Arsehole of Africa ... Nigeria. This is one of the richest 'Black'African states. All the money is sucked up by corrupt officials who control the police and army. What can the man in the street do, but try to survive and support their family. Corrupt and inneficient government (just like Labour and Tory, but more so) need to be sorted out before having a go at the ordinary peeps.

Pat asks why they continue to have children when they are starving. Pepps had children in the concentration camps 9of Nazi Germany, the answer is HOPE. Without it you are finished. In Africa, as with many parts of the world, there are no pensions, no state aid and no help for the disabled. When you get old, ill or knackered then the only peeps who will feed and tend you are your family, just like England 100 or more years ago. I remember 6 kids in a family being normal, they are your social security and pension. If you have 12 kids, 4 will probably die in infancy from Malaria or other endemic diseases, another 3 will no doubt not reach puberty (about 9 in Africa) the other 5 will help you out as and when the time comes. There are no short term answers to Africa and it's problems and it would take too long to answer all of them here, however I do agree that tribalism and religious differences cause a lot of problems/ wars/ riots and deaths. Christian Missionaries have a lot to answer for, mainly Catholic, they still subscribe to the no contraceptive rules. African Catholics are a very conservative lot.

a few years after this was done for the first time I recall a documentary on the telly looking into how much of the money raised was spent on import duty into the places where the charity was going, needless to say I was well pissed off, most of the money appeared to be going to the government to pay for the war which caused the problems in the first place.
