Caught some of an american chopper special. Haven't seen one in a while so left it on for a bit. A coueple of things that struck me. The first was decieving the people who had turned up to the event. They claimed that they were going to design a bike with audience participation then build it on stage, when in fact it was all a sham and the bike was already built. The second thing that struck me was the constant use of the word fans. Now I don't know about anyone else on here but speaking personally there are bike builders whose bikes I like, there are some I respect, there are a few that I admire but there are none that I am a fan of. I may be a fan of their work for example Indian Larry. I've never really got the hero worship thing even of bands i like. I think the thing with American Chopper is that its the most visible example of the cult of the celebrity in the custom bike world. The same thing happened with time team about 5-10 years ago in archaeology. You had fans of individuals on Time Team. Very strange.

I did say I only watched it for a bit
It wasn't really an starting an argument more an observation about this shift from being concerned with bike builders, riders and customers to fans. Has this started to happen with the British biker bujild off where the competitors are gathering hordes of fans rather than customers?

They can afford it with the silly money people pay for the Bikes plus the TV Fees.....They are just a fashion at the moment' Its trendy to have a Chopper built with a TV program about it they won't last once discovery channel looses intrest in them...
