I ain't trying to teach but when I rebuilt a 2.9V6 Sierra lump a while ago I had the same problem.Only when I turned the dizzy so the marks on the timing plate were offset to how it should be when the drive is located did the TDC and No1 marks line up would it run as the bevel drive turns as you lower the distributor into its hole.
Hope you can make sense of that drivel!

Ford 'v'6 engines number their cylinders 123 on one side and 456 on the other. Don't know if thats the prob but it can catch you out when timing.

The firing order is 1,4,2,5,3,6 checked lead order from dizzy.
i must be doing something wrong is there a certain way to get no1 at TDC?
thought you turned the engine over by hand until the timing marks line up and rotor arm is pointing backwards towards the no1 cylinder position on the dizzy cap,

As you sit behind the engine (i.e. distributor at the rear) Number one cylinder is front right (under the oil filler)
Cylinders 1,2,3 are all on the right bank.
If your oil filler cap is big enough when removed to see the rockers, turn the engine by hand. The engine needs to be turned over until both rockers for no.1 cyl are loose. Remove number 1 spark plug and (very carefully) push a screwdriver down the hole until you can feel the top of the piston. Gently turning the engine will lift or lower the screwdriver.
At top dead centre with the cylinder on the compresion stroke you can ckeck to see which lead the distributor/rotor arm is aimed at. This will be your number one lead and you can work the leads and firing order from that.
The rotor arm in the dizzy turns in a clockwise direction so the lead to the left of number 1 will got to 4 which is the front left cylinder.
Hope this helps
