I'm building me 1st chop using a suzuki gsxf as a running gear donor. I'd like to just cut the end cans off an' run the chop like that (just put the cans on for the mot), but me mate said I'd have to have something in the way of baffles or I'd bugger the exhaust valves or sommat, is this true, an' if so what's the easiest/cheapest way to do this?

the old way was putting VW baffles in the ends, still loud

not sure re rest

You'd have to mess around with the jetting big style.Might be worth booking some dyno time,be a HUUUGE amount quicker than doing it yerself.Costs a bit tho'.

I'm with Dougie on this one,if you play with the gasses comin' out you've gotta alter what goes in.

Yessssssssss. I know that feeling - sorry to slightly hijack the thread here - Someone did that to Mrs R's bike - before they sold it, jetted it to run with slashcuts (which are now for sale). They then put the Motad 4-1 on there (the one that kept falling off) without jetting it back to how it was.

What is the best solution with that (as it's still not quite right - though better than it has been now I sorted the `zorst)? Would it be to rejet to standard or get new carbs?

For a Motad rejet to standard.A couple of questions, what's the bike, are the carbs slide or CV and are you using pod filters,y'know,S&Bs or K&Ns,or is it the airbox? If it's pods there are a couple things you've got to do depending on which type carbs you've got.Let us know,I can mebbe point you in the right directions,or at least to a site that can help.

Cool Dougie, the bike is a Kwak GT750, same as mine (same model - P5). CV Carbs and using S&B filters, it was fitted with an air corrector kit.

Because I've kept mine as standard with the airbox and carb jetting, we can compare notes; hers runs like an asthmatic pig in comparison - nasty flatspot around the top end of the rev range, good for about 85-90 downhill and not much else. Mrs R's has got the 750 fuel tap (tank from an 750 E1), whereas mine has the 550 one (as my tank's off the Spectre) and should be capable of over the ton (from experience).

I was thinking about getting rid of the S&B's and the corrector kit (which looks like it is a jet screwed into one of the holes in the back of each carb - I maybe wrong) and sticking a GT airbox back on. The downside of that though is that we will have loads of fun re-jigging about with the electrickery that has been stuffed under the seat - there is even an alarm under there ferchrissakes (not that we know how it works or is wired up) and one horn, instead of the usual two.

I found an American site for Suzi GSs that has more info on carbs than you can shake a stick at,and it'll probably apply to any bike. You may have to register,it's here and a mine of information (not just about carbs),http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/index.php
Use the search facility, but be prepared for umpteen hits.I got my carbs sorted using info from here, okay they're slides, but there is enough on CVs to help you.A couple things I discovered that'll apply to yours are:1-remove the breather pipes from the carbs, that'll lessen turbulence in the float bowls caused by the pod filters and increase fuel flow at higher revs;2-raise the slide needles one notch as the pods will give a weak mixture at higher revs on the standard setting.
Ypu may have to mess around with the tickover mixture, but that's not that critical. They've got two carb gurus,Earl Fornes (Earlfor) and Keith Krause, and these guys are good!I think the old GS is better carburated now than it was when it left the factory.Check out the site and good luck!

By the way, some of the questions on the forum are a hoot!

I know I'll have to get the carbs set up properly, but my question was, can I run straight throughs ie. cut the end cans off the exhaust (and just put 'em on for mots) without burning the valves?

Sorry Joe,we got sidetracked.Personally I wouldn't risk it without rejetting.
