Check this out.

So who's gonna test this out , eh?

It does work but also makes it easier to wash the oil off of the bores, you would wear out your cylinders in around a tenth of the time.

I seem to remember adding similar things to fuel as a go faster measure as a kid. I also remember overdoing it and taking out me valves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as pyro said!!! dont do it aint worth the risk!!!!!! the extra heat generate by the acetone will eventually cause a meltdown!!!!! its all down to to how the engine vaporises the fuel!!! why do you think cars have water heated inlet manifolds!!! ;)

there are some serious flaws in that article, and I dont think that the author has an in depth understanding of how engines work.

Right then, I'll cancel mi trip to the chemist.

I wast intigued by the article and I know it wasn't specific to bikes, but by sticking it on here, I knew there would be some technical bods that could & would come up with some good reasons why not to have a try.

I'd never do anything like that to my 1100 but I could have been tempted to try it on the 'Bowser' rat. The Bowser's tang holds about £30 of fuel - so god knows how many miles it would have done if it was a viable fuel mod.

Some years ago at test track that cant be named (not supposed to be there at time) we tried running a couple of honda 90's on various mixes petrol / acetone - petrol / lighterfuel etc, the bikes were wreckers so it didnt matter what we did.

The one running on the acetone mix 9/1 lasted less than half a mile before dropping the exhaust valve into the engine, it was doing an estimated 80mph at the time, on examining the engine the bore was bone dry and the rings fecked.

The one running the lighter fuel mix 6/4 was doing 95mph and then the head decided to leave the engine, I still have a scar from it. The head was melted and the valves jammed into the piston. There wasnt much else to examine.

This was 1982.

We did try other *cough chemicals but I dont think thats relevant here...

Yeah I did that..Blew the top off an engine..mind you I used a lot of acetone. pretty to watch as the flames shoot out of the carb! :D John

Now I've read the other posts, it seems we all tried it!

some rait concoctions used,,,,petrol/parafin,diesel/petrol,smokes like fukk,petrol/turps,dont last long wi that stuff,,,,, best i was told we used to av a mobylette moped thing, bloke told us to tek flywheel cover off pour molten lead into flywheel then run moped,,we did 400 yds 60mph ish engine lets go chucks me into hedgebottom, engine everywhere,,fukk it leave it in hedge-bottom,,,, have ya tried naptha thats volitile stuff, worse than napalm,,,,

The articles I've read on other sites recommend 2 to 3 OUNCES (Max!!!) to 10 GALLONS of fuel... You were lucky you didn't do what the Challenger Shutle did.

An eyedropper of acetone (Di Methyl Ketone or DMK) to a 2-3 gallon tank is fine: you're not using as fuel, you're using it as an additive. It works on Diesel as well. Only real drawback at those ratios is that Acetone is a Hydrophile... it likes water. Any moisture in the tank and it will affect the running, which is why it's not added at the pumps: those petrol station tanks have a lot of water collected under the petrol reservoirs.

Most of the performance enhancing additives on sale (Like Redex) contain between 5-15% DMK.

50ml of DMK at the chemist cost 99p, eyedropper about 75P... enough for a dozen tanks full. I'm trying it out and it does seem to give it a bit more poke, and the engine seems to like it.Too early to see if it gives the 5-10% fuel economy increase most people report.

hmmmm, acetone(propanone) is water soluble and my understanding of this solvent is that it doesnt mix readily with oils petrol and such like, it will sink to the bottom of oil based fuels, and youll end up burning pure acetone, result, knackered engine, as it burns at a much higher temperature than petrol, and explodes rather burns when under presure  o ye, and ya cant realy see the flame if ya spill it and it ignites, till ya garage is well alight

seeing as I use it to clean **** off heatsinks for PC's, i can easily see why it stops oil sticking to stuff in your engine.

I'll slap a turbo on instead... we'll be spending the same when you rebuild your engine:D

9 to 1 mix????

.

We was just pissing around :D I think we had something else mixed in there as well but cant remember what it was, will get hold of my mates who were there and see if they remember.

Another thing we did (1978) was build an electric fan into an RD250DX airbox not sure where the fan came from, the idea was to pressureise the airbox, the motor was linked to a sensor on the rev counter cable, it was crap didnt seem make much difference, until we checked the fuel consumption, I cant explain it and maybe we made a mistake but it was using 1/3 less fuel, dont remember the figures now but remember we discussed it for days.

Actually it's 2-propanone :p .
I didn't get where I am today without failing A-level chemistry. :D

It's true it likes water and organics (like ethanol fuel) more than petrol, although it does mix with petrol enough to break it's surface tension. That's all we're really need from it in this case. It won't gravitate to the bottom of the tank unless water is sitting there under the petrol ready to suck it up.

In the quantites we're talking about it's not really a problem, and if you've got water in your tank you've got bigger worries.

If it mixes with any water in your tank, the mechanicals exploding isn't the problem. Rather it will make the engine run poorly as it's snuffing the ignition.
