I was told I'd get more for me squidies with a new desktop but it's more about taking up space than anything else so laptop seems the way to go + a combie printer/scanner that can live under the stairs so to speak.
Don't need it for games as all the sprogs have all left the nest.. :D

We got a great Mac laptop on e-bay for £50.00, I use it for uni stuff because otherwise we're fighting over the desktop all the time.

While my desktop is a Mac because they are beautiful to look at and easy to use, if you go for a laptop then a PC is the way to go simply because there is more (free) software available and they are easier to sort out if they go wrong.
I also use a Toshiba Satelite laptop which is great. I take it on the bike when I'm travelling to carry all my pictures (got hundreds) my music (got 53 hours worth and still adding) to do work.
Wish I'd got one with a smaller screen as a laptop is meant to be portable; so why did I get one that's too big to go in a pannier..?
Don't try to save too much money. Make sure it has a CD re-writer.
