How do I alter the logbook of my bike when converting it to a trike. Also, where do I go for an MOT, bike shop or car garage.
I can't find any info at DVLA or VOSA websites, so any links would be of help.

Thanks in advance

You see; that's what comes of now reading the mag regularly...

However. Instead of getting into complex legislation I'll tell you the way I do it. On the bikes current log book fill in the "Changes" section as change of wheelbase, three wheels. And in the bit marked "Taxation class" put "Tricycle".

Send the log book to the DVLA at Swansea and wait for them to decide whether or not to impliment their owns rules or the current official ones.

Honestly. Sit back and wait for them to tell you what to do.

It may involve paying £70 and taking the trike to an MSVA test at your nearest VOSA vehicle inpection site. (Nearest, that's a laugh' there are only 23 sites in the country)

It may involve you getting the trike MoT'd at a class 3 testing centre, filling in a load of paperwork and paying another £38 for registration plus providing current insurance and buying six months road tax.

Or, they might just send you an amended log book...!!!

See what happens then post another thread here and we'll tell you what to do.

Thanks Alik. I have done similar things with other vehicles - even invented my own reg. number and had it entered onto DVLC computers. Alas, I have never tried to change the wheel plan or taxation class before.
I am an avid reader of the magazine and your warblings in trike tech, which I look forward to each month. It's hard to find any info on backyard brew vehicles of any sort, so keep up the good work.
The only gripe I have with the trike tech., is trying to follow a project for the next instalment because you have so many diferent projects on the go.
I was very interested in the Eliminator Trike and the wacky bike project with the VW dizzy modification. Maybe you could make the tech section bigger.

Thanks again

just a note to say that I sent off the logbook of my bike / trike last week, simply filled in the details as per above and will await the return to see what happens.

as and when I have any news will let you all know, and also post a pic of the trike in its almost finished glory

hope that its not a case of the msva thing as when I last spoke to them, and a local bike shop also told me that theres a 7 month wait!!!!!!!!, HMM best not get too many plans for next summer :( was bad enough that I have to take it 75 miles to the test on its maiden "legal" outing, but if thats the way it has to be, then so be it, will just ride the chop for the summer..... right then lets go and get that finished LOL

On the basis of a 7 month wait just take it to a different area (if you have to that is)
MSVA test booking are done directly with the test centre. Phoning them and ashing what the wait is, tends to be better than doom and gloom word of mouth.
I only have to wait a week at Chelmsford Essex

I meant to say that you will get a visit from a vehicle inspector.. Don't panic. They just check the engine number and that the vehicle exists.
Some areas ask you to take the trike to them.

Many years ago when I first got my trike it was still on a bike log book, i just filled it in as 'changed to 2 wheel rear drive' it came back as a 3 wheeled rear digger. I phoned DVLA up about this and they said

As long as its got Tricycle on the taxation class its fine

it's been like that now for 6 years with no prroblems.

Well mine doesn't say tricycle, it says Three Wheeled Motorcycle! Must be right as it still says that after the change of address etc.

My trike's based on a Californian V-Max. Before it was triked the logbook described the Max as a moped for some weird reason. After the MSVA its still described as a moped but the tax class is tricycle :)

If your taxation class says combo.... your trike is illegal I think. I would check if I was you, if you get stopped and have to 'produce' you'll be in the ****. Someone may correct me if I'm wrong though?

You're right Pat. It needs to say 'Tricycle'. Trouble is often in the hands of whoever does the typing at Swansea (it is in Wales y'know!)
I had a TS125cc Suzuki 'Saloon' once upon a time.!

I just happened to have a look at my reg book for my Vmax trike. It has:

Body Type: Scooter Combination
Taxation class: Tricycle
Wheelplan: 3-Wheel

This reg book was issued just under a year ago after the trike passed MSVA.

However the reg book for the original donor V-Max did describe it as a "Scooter Combination" - seems to be have been tagged as that when it was imported from USA in 1992.
