no siree, that's completely wrong... as long as he's got CBT he's OK when he's 17. :D
He still has to do his test within 2 years otherwise he's got to do the CBT again.

cbt between £70 - £90 usually, whether you do it on a ped or geared bike it covers you both. cbt covers you for 2 years to do your test then or do cbt again. direct access is when you're 21 covers you for anything. or thats how it was a coupla years ago. :)

He must have been mate, because according to 'Motorcycling - The Essential skills' published by the DSA/TSO on page 15 it says:
'You don't have to take CBT if you ... already hold a valid Certificate of Completion (DL196) obtained during a previous motorcyce entitlement or when riding a moped'
(the book was one of my main training manuals - it's also a good book to get for someone starting out)
The boxes on the form were just to show the DSA how many folk did CBT on what machinery, that's all.
Like you say Critch, he was a grabbing bastard! A lot of instuctors are ;)

Hiya Poridge. My daughter just took all of that. She bought her 50cc bike, insured it etc and took her CBT. Cos she did that on her own bike it was cheaper, but I'm not sure how much it cost her. The CBT is valid for 2 years.
At 17 she hired a bike from the same school that took her at 16 and had a few refresher lessons on it, passed her test and bought herself a Ducati 600 Monster. She also had to pay to have that restricted to 33bhp which costs about £200 fitted (you pay for the registration, not the kit or fitting... worra rip off!).
The CBT is valid for 2 years unless you take and pass your test, otherwise, another is needed to continue on the 125cc.
The Fast track thing is only available to over 21s but passing a test at 17, you're legal to ride unlimited cc & bhp 2 years after taking the test.
I'll ask her how much it cost, but I would imagine the costs would vary from area to area (we're in the midlands) so check out a few local schools :)

The CBT can be taken on a twist & go, but if you take your test on one, I think that's where the difference lies... not sure, that could just be cars :D

My son got a scooter recently 90cc ovetta cost £1200 second hand It broke down so many times he has paid about £400 on repairs. Because he bought it from a bike shop they threw in the CBT, Crash helmet, and insurance..He bought a brand new unregistered 125cc back up sukida scooter for £400 from the internet bike shop on ebay and has just finished running it in. You do the maths. 50cc is just enough to start with but if you spend a lot of money on it, it will still only be a 50cc and he will still want to change it when he is 17.
Talk it over with him and good luck to both of you whatever you decide. John.

See my earlier post Kylie. The rules were straight from the book I used as an instructor (a couple of years ago, but still current)

Hi PW, i done my CBT last sunday (i start my direct access on Monday, test on Wednesday), there were two 16 year olds doing the same as me but one of the lads had a geared 50cc at home, he let him ride the geared bike off road but had to use the ped when they went out, it cost £90. What advice i would give is to get your son to learn the highway code, one of the young lads didnt have clue about how the roads worked and we ended up coming back early for the instructor to refuse to train him until he learnt the highway code etc and no doubt he will charge him another £90.

The instructor shouldn't charge him full fee again, if he only failed the road ride. Unless... see Critch's post above... otherwise, the firm that I used to work for only charged for the road bit (£30 or so) and that person wouldn't have to do the full day again.
Gazza, how long have you been riding?

Hi Mitch,
Maybe the instructoor will charge him less i dont know, all i know is he seen his arse because the lad flew out at a Give Way sign and could have been dead if there was something coming all because he didnt know he had to stop, the lad had a bad attitude anyway and wasnt listening to a word the instructor was trying to teach him.
Iv been riding bikes for years, my dad bought me my first bike when i was 6, it was a little 50cc Italijet (spelling?) and then after that i had my own off road bikes up until i was about 18 (im 25 now). Been doing rallies for years either in car or pillion and now decided the time is right to get my licence and get on the road then i can start doing rallies on my own bike. After CBT the instructor said i only need two days training and then in for my test on the third day so its not too bad, fingers crossed.

I was in the same boat as you in a way... started off not exactly being the paragon of virtue (as in riding big bikes well before passing my test). Once I finally got round to it, I had CBT day one, then days 2 and three training and then on day four, did my test. The other bloke I was out with got 1 minor and I got 2.
All the best Gazza! :D

Well just to let you all know, i had my DAS yesterday and passed :D
Only had two days training (Monday & Tuesday) but it was bloody hard work, lost all my confidence on Tuesday when making stupid mistakes but all came good on my test, i am now the proud owner of a full bike licence.
